I recently bought a XM(m) 45 Compact and like it a lot. Can't speak for the 9mm or .40 cal models.

just for ammo costs, go with the 9, also I believe you have more round count with the 9 than the 40

Not sure on round count of the 40 in a sub. My 9 came with a 13rd and 17 rd. My 40 4" came with 2 10rd

May I humble suggest you get your hands on a XDm .45 compact prior to your finial decision...

If not, then the 9mm XD Sub for a single gun new shooter intending to hit the range a fair amount. Id prefer the .40 cal round, but the price of ammo will keep most from shooting as much as they should to become trained and proficient.. If you are already that, and just need to get good with THIS gun.. then go for the .40

Can't go wrong with that one! I have the 9 and it is a sweet shooter. My buddy has the 40 and loves his too. Be advised, .40 ammo is higher priced by about $6/box on average. Where you pay $12.95 for 9mm, you'll pay $18.95 for .40.

I say go with the 9mm as well. Nothing against the 40sw but in subcompact 9mm is a better shooter with less muzzle flip. I like the way the XD service size shoots vs the XD subcompact. If going to compact or full size or something with some weight on it, then deffinitely the 40sw. As other's have said, 9mm ammo is more plentifuly and lower price if you'll spend a lot of range time.

Which do you shoot better? The 9mm has the advantage of cheaper ammo and a higher capacity. The .40 is a beefier round than the 9mm but some have a harder time shooting it compared to a 9mm.

I don't think you can go wrong with either choice so come up with some criteria that are important to you and evaluate both guns both against those to see which one stands out. If you've done all that, go with your gut.

I got the Springfield XD sub compact 9mm and I completely love it. My criteria was the higher round count and the cheaper ammo. I'm going to be shooting it way more at the range than I ever am at a BG...and I'm cheap

I was told today that 9mm is made to wound people while the 40s&w was made to stop people. Any truth? My other thought was to get 1 in a sub compact and then get another one later Ina compact and even go with a 40 s&w any thoughts?

No. Absolutely ZERO truth in this, and if a Gunshop worker told you this, I would love to speak to him.

No caliber is designed to wound anyone. Every single self defensive bullet on the market, be it a .22 Magnum or a .454 Casull, is designed to STOP THE THREAT. Now, a whole lot of argument has been made as to the effectiveness of a particular caliber, but no knowledgeable person would tell you that any caliber is only intended to wound.

I carried an MP5 fairly frequently in the military when doing anti-piracy boarding and whatnot, and that gun uses a 9mm round. I've seen a lot of dead pirates.

Wounding round? 124 grain +p 9mm out of a 4-5inch barrel runs similar velocities to a snub nose 357mag and you don't here anybody calling a snub .357 a wounding round. Wounding round?:

Edit: It will wound you to death!

Last 2 posts are spot on.

You are not under armed today w/ quality 9mm Personal Defense ammo.

In our family the ladies own 3 9sc's. I carry one on Sunday some. The one thing I will say to anyone is shoot the .40 first. They are a lot more to control in that little package.
