Just for the challenge I have sometimes wondered how I could successfully conceal a Sig Sauer P556 "handgun". Having had my CHL for 16 years I have become very good at concealing many types of handguns year round. I know that printing is legal but I pride myself at being totally concealed. For the P556 I know winter is probably my only option with probably a sling, but man that thing is heavy too. Anyone ever pull this off. Before everyone gets excited yes I did register that as an SBR as well as register the suppressor. I would have to take off that folding stock to convert it back to a handgun and remove the vertical grip.

Hm, I guess I'm confused about the law.

I thought once it was an SBR, you can't just remove the stock and its magically a pistol again.

Am I wrong?

I am hesitant about the SBR question myself. Another reason why I have not done it. technically when the stock is removed it is no longer a SBR. Can is a YHM.

Q&A I found about the issue from the ATF:

Q: If removal and destruction or disposition of the short barrel removes the firearm from the purview NFA, is there a minimum time period the barrel must remain unattached for the firearm to not be regulated under the NFA?

The temporary removal of the barrel for repair or change of caliber does not remove a NFA firearm from the purview of the NFA. If the registrant maintains control of the parts required for assembly of a SBR, he or she must maintain the registration as a SBS or SBS regardless of the length of time that the barrel is unattached.

I know its talking about barrels, but seems that it would apply to stocks as well.

Once its an SBR, its an SBR until you file the paperwork to say otherwise, I think.

Last year the ATF cleared up the whole once its a rifle its always a rifle crap. except for NFA weapons you can have 2 configurations for a firearm. One as a pistol and one as a rifle. In rifle config must have 16"+ barrel with stock attached and in pistol form no stock attached. For an NFA SBR you can rock it as a pistol without the stock and foregrip or as a AOW would be without the stock and with the foregrip and as a rifle with any length barrel the same as or longer than on your form1 or 4. you can even ammend the form for different barrels and calibers if you like although it is pointless.

Interesting. Would be nice if we didn't have to worry about bureaucratic decisions like this that could put us in jail if they decide to interpret something a new way, wouldn't it?

at least they finally cleared it up. They could of said that anyone that had a carbine kit for a pistol had constructive intent of illegal SBR since the stock could possibly be used with the pistol length barrrel.

I wish the law was a little clearer than mud when it comes to a long federal prison term for some confusing law.
