I'll just say this much: They may think they cruised around the gulf for a month undetected, but I'm willing to bet they're wrong.

My son told me about an exercise where they were shadowed by a fast attack submarine that sneaks up directly under them without being detected. He said the fast attack was so close under them that they could hear conversations "without any special equipment" on my son's boomer. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Russian sub had a friend following them around the Gulf.

Can you imagine what would Pres. Kennedy or Pres. Reagan would do if there was a Russian sub in our waters during their times?

I'm sure they were just delivering a load of Russian AK-47s to Eric Holder to get the serial numbers before running down to Mexico...

I'm not all that impressed. The only reason they haven't done this more often is because their navy is just now recovering. Nothing "illegal" as long as they stay outside 12 nautical miles from the US Coast.

I would also be extremely surprised if the US was not "aware" of the akula. The US is a little weird about talking about their sub capabilities and this is especially true of the Seawolf and Virginia class subs (Boomers are a given, the US won't even acknowledge their purpose)

I'd be willing to bet that there is a US sub crew out there having a good laugh over this report, since they tracked the sub from halfway across the Atlantic.

I do have some experience with this as a former ET3(SS). I served aboard 2 LA class fast attacks, USS Philadelphia out of Groton and the USS Salt Lake City out of San Diego.

It was an honest mistake. They just didn't know that a Seawolf class attack sub was glued to their tail. Now we need a little oops!

Seawolf probably had a solution plotted and a couple fish warmed up!

I haven't read the Art of War lately, but I bet there is something to this affect in there.

Will someone explain to me what is so unusual about a Russian sub off our coast, outside our coastal waters? I'm corn-fused. If I'm not mistaken, we have been watching them, and they have been watching us, for about 100 years now.
