Isn't Eric Holder the ultimate boss of the ATF, and if so, who is Holder's boss?

THIS.

Good luck explaining this crap, you democrats who claim to support the 2nd Amendment. Can't be done.

AndyC wrote:I read this morning about an FFL and his wife being arrested in Laredo, TX here - and it reminded me of the Reese family in New Mexico who were FFLs and recently railroaded by the ATF.

That pattern of ATF abuses reminded me of the original intent behind the Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986 - which we think of as the 1986 "Machinegun Ban" - which, proposed after a formal Senate investigation into gun-rights and ATF abuse, was actually intended to protect citizens and FFLs from ATF harassment.
They need to be disbanded completely. The tax collecting duties can be handled by the IRS and the explosives part can be handled by the FBI/DHS.

Unfortunately, before anything can be done about the excesses of the ATF, we need to take back the White House and purge the DOJ of the statist retards that currently infest it, some of whom have been there since the Clinton administration since GWB didn't want to be seen as partisan by firing Clinton appointees.

Until we have a DOJ that is serious about actual Justice and not partisan power grabbing, any attempt by the Senate to do anything about the ATF will be largely grandstanding, I'm afraid.

I'm curious what protections this Act is supposed to have given us and why they've apparently just disappeared if FFLs can be still be easily arrested and convicted on trumped-up charges (in my opinion) - especially given that we lost the right to register any new full-auto firearms because of it. Seems to me as if only the anti-gun part of that law is enforced, while the pro-gun part has been rendered invisible and irrelevant.
This is part of the reason "National Reciprocity" makes me VERY wary. Allowing folks at the federal level to make gun laws usually doesn't go as well as we hope it will. :???:

The FOPA of 1986 was a GOOD bill, by and large. It took a LOT of work by an "old-school" pro-2A Democrat, as well as others of both parties, to get it through "the system", only to have it overshadowed at the last minute by the insertion of the "machinegun amendment" by a VERY Anti-2A Democrat (Socialist). If the bill would have been pulled because of it, it would have NEVER have made it through again. All of that said, this law did make an attempt to reign in the excesses of the BATFE...but ANY law is only as good or bad as the ENFORCEMENT of it. That is why GOOD law enforcement personnel are so critical, as is good leadership. Even the best of laws can be used in a negative way by bad folks...and as MOST of us understand, we have some of the WORST bad folks in charge right now. As always, my despisement of them knows no bounds. I certainly think that if we do get the REGIME CHANGE that we so desperately need, that the issue of BATFE disbanding or at least downsizing, really needs to be pushed up the chain through the NRA. It will take a LOT of members pushing for it for the organization to take this seriously, though.

I think we should rein in ATF like we reined in smallpox.
