Ft Jackson SC - Anyone been there recently?

I'm in the process of planning my trip out to Ft Jackson to see my daughter graduate from BCT, and I'm looking for some info.
Hoping someone has been there recently and can help me.

We're driving, so hubs and I will both be carrying and I know we're good on the way there. I also know that we can't carry on post, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with our weapons while we're there.
I know each post has policies/procedures one must follow in regards to concealed carry weapons, and I have 3 different phone numbers to call and ask my questions to.....if someone would just answer the phone. :???:

Can we unload our weapons, and put them in a safe in the trunk of our car?
Would we have to declare our weapons, and then go check them at the armory?
Or is our best bet going to be locking them in a safe at the hotel?

Off to try calling those numbers again......

Off post is your only option unless things have changed in the last 6 months or so.

While you can bring them on post...... empty, locked, etc,, you cannot store them in the car,, and the unit arms rooms have no provision or authority to store privately owned weapons for other then soldiers assigned to the post. Nor is there a storgage option elses where on post for visitors.

Let me make a call…. I’ll post back after lunch… Just to double check

Thank you! Hopefully you're not calling the same numbers I'm trying - or if you are, that you have better luck. LOL

Oh they will answer.. :biggrinjester:

And keep in mind, if your told you can.. make them be specific...

Because the answer is you can have the weapon,, if the question is asked wrong, or an answer given to a question you did not ask.
h. It is prohibited to keep privately owned weapons in vehicles, even when properly secured, while at work, or while attending to other business on the installation not directly related to authorized shooting activities on the installation, except as follows:
That is that part that counts for you... as your NOT just transiting the post.
Your not on post to participate in a hunt or use the range.
but some will read or be told
f. Transporting in any vehicle any privately owned firearm except secured (locked) in a closed glove box, closed console, trunk compartment, or, if necessary, affixed (locked) to a rack designed to transport long barreled weapons or, in the case of a pick-up or sport utility vehicle, in the rear compartment, cargo compartment, or behind the seat (pick-up).
And mis understand it....

Fort Jackson Regulation 600-3 is the guiding document.

I just read Regulation 600-3, and I think I'm more confused now. LOL
But I *think* what I'm understanding from this (and if I'm wrong, can you explain it like I'm 5 years old please? My brain hurts today. ;-) )......
As a visitor, I cannot keep my firearm anywhere in my car while on post, even if it is empty/locked and secured in a glove box or safe.
I will also assume that I am not allowed to carry an empty weapon on my person, even if concealed.

So....I guess I'm shopping for a portable gun safe that I can secure to something in the hotel room (I checked, they don't have in room safes  )

So according to the Provost Marshals office, FJ Reg 600-3 is still current.. As there is state property on both sides of post, a civilian can transport a gun unloaded, secured in the vehicle while transiting post.
You can bring a unloaded, secured gun on post to attend an authorized event (hunt or use the sportsman club range)
But you cannot store a weapon in your car while on post.
There is no provision to store your weapon at an authorized location (unit arms room)
And correct, you absolutely cannot carry the unloaded weapon with you as you move about the post.
Sorry not what you wanted to hear I’m sure.
Sounds like best option is a small safe in your room, a do not disturb sign on the door to keep housekeeping out and a low profile that would not attract the attention of would be thieves to your room.

Thanks, bronco78. You reiterated what I *thought* I understood, and outlined what probably is the best plan.

Gun safe recommendations? LOL Need either two smaller ones, or one bigger one that will fit 2 pistols.....I'll start a new thread though.

Something simple and low key like a nano with cable from GunVault.. Lock it up AND hide it to the best of your ability combined witha DND sign to keep out the casual folks.... After that, unload, take ammo and mags with you (away from the gun) and let your insurance company deal with the property loss if it happens.

Been using the DND sign for years, even before I ever even thought of carrying. Too much stuff goes missing to NOT use it. ;-)
I'll check out the nanos from GunVault.

Thanks for all your help!

(I never did get any answer at those phone numbers, btw.....are they all out at a picnic or something? LOL)

What number did you call? WHo did you call?

The PMO office answered when I called, so did the Garrison commanders office.

I had two different numbers for the Weapons Registration/Information office, which just rang and rang, and I also tried the Director of Emergency Services, which did go to voicemail, but I opted not to leave a message.
Help me....what is the PMO office?

Sorry, Provost Marshals Office = PMO... AKA the Cop shop.

Dir EM Services is a admin paper pusher directorate.. not where you wanted.

Weapons registration is also the vehicle registration office, should have picked up, likely a bad number.

With questions like yours you’re looking for two opinions, points of view and opinion.

What is the post policy or the regulation that governs the issue or event?
And from the agency that will interact with you or otherwise deal with you reference your question.. what is your understanding of policy and how do you think it needs to be done.. Kind of like we say on CHL issues at home… You may beat the rap, but not the ride. .. so you need an understanding of both regulations and of those enforcing said regulations.
