Moving then moving back

If I acquire my CHL then move out of state, will my license still be good according to Texas, not the state I move to. That state requires 1 year residence for license. To complicate it more I expect to be back in Texas within 5 years. What happens to my license ?

If you get your Texas license, when you move you will have to change your address on the license ($25 fee) and it will become a non-resident license. Depending on the state you move to, if they honor Texas non-resident licenses, then you would be allowed to carry. Other states that honor non-resident Texas license and Texas itself will still honor your license. When you move back, if within your period before renewal you will just need to change you address again (another $25) and you will once again have a resident license.

This sounds like a challenge that the NRA should consider. What other Constitutional Rights does that state have a waiting period to exercise? /rant off

If you expect to move back, I suggest doing the address change, renew when it's time, and do another address change when you move back. That's cheaper than starting from scratch when you return, and leaves no unsightly gaps.
As others noted, without knowing the tdy state, we can't offer any advice on reciprocity et cetera.

Louisiana ...... and I was floored when I read it ! I know they reciprocate a Texas resident, but do not know about non-resident. I wasn't even aware Texas would allow me a non-resident license. So, if anyone knows about LA honoring a non-resident license that info is what I need.

Louisiana Honors Non-Resident Permits/Licenses From the States They Honor. As of 8/15/11 A LA resident must have a LA Permit/License to Carry in LA.
but the good news is.......
Residency Requirements for Those With a Valid Permit/License from a State Louisiana Honors. R.S. 40:1379.3 (New Law that becomes effective August 15, 2011)
T. (6) Notwithstanding Paragraph (4) of this Subsection, a person who has newly obtained residency in Louisiana, who is twenty-one years of age or older, and who possesses a valid out-of-state permit from a jurisdiction recognized pursuant to the provisions of this Subsection may lawfully carry a handgun under such permit, provided that the person also carries a date-stamped copy of an application for a permit issued pursuant to the provisions of this Section or a dated receipt for the same. The provisions of this Paragraph shall not apply if the application has been denied, if the person has received the permit for which the person has applied under this Section, or more than forty-five days have elapsed from the date on the date
stamped receipt or application.
However: I do not see this section T(6) on the LA official web site..

Hey all, This is also my first post, and I am not trying to HiJack the OP's post, but I am in the same position myself. I am just receiving my CHL, and I am about 85% moving to Denver Colorado for a job. Could someone Pm me or post any information they would have regarding Colorado's Laws?

Welcome to the forum. Your Texas CHL will still be valid once you move to Colorado if you change your address. UNFORTUNATELY Colorado only accepts resident CHL's, meaning you must have a CHL from the state you are a resident in. So once you change your address to Colorado they will no longer accept your Texas CHL. Best bet is to get one as quick as you can from Colorado once you move there.

Colorado reciprocity (or lack thereof) aside, if you believe you will return to Texas, it's cheaper and easier in the long run to change the address on your Texas CHL to prevent it being suspended. Then change the address back when you return.
