NRA Courses??

I am thinking about taking some NRA Instructors courses so I can add other options to my class schedule besides CHL Classes. I was looking at the class options and there are so many. I am looking for recommendations on what class to start with. I am not interested in doing any of the rifle classes. I really want to be able to offer beginner gun classes, Gun safety & maybe a parent child beginner gun class.

It seems Basic Pistol and Home Firearm Safety would be a good fit. Maybe also FIRST Steps Pistol but I'm no longer an instructor, so I don't know if that requires a separate instructor certificate or is included in being able to teach Basic Pistol.

Where are you?--I can recommend a fantastic TC--and discourage you from taking from a couple I know!!

Basic Pistol--you can teach Basic Pistol & First Steps--what's the difference? First Steps is for the person(or couple) who walk up & say "This is my gun. Teach me how to use my gun?" Basic Pistol is a comprehensive course about handguns--revolvers, semi, ammo, etc

If it is your first instructor ticket(with NRA)--I encourage the Basic Pistol--it also includes the BIT(Basic Instructor Training) that is required for all instructor. Once you have it, you don't have to repeat it for every instructor class. Also--some of the TCs are combining the Home Firearm Safety with the Basic Pistol, so you really get 2 in one class

I am in Conroe but willing to travel for a good teacher (Not necessarily thrilled out the options in my area) . Do I have to take any of the courses that are not instructor courses to take the instructor courses? I have never done anything NRA related. I just starting thinking about doing this so I have not done a lot of research yet. Thanks.

I can give you the name of an excellent training counselor in Lake Charles, LA. Take the basic pistol class first, see if your TC will tag on home firearm safety also. Not a shooting course but, Refuse To Be A Victim is a great course. PM me if you want the info on the TC in Lake Charles.

Jan Heath at Grand Prairie Gun Club is the only one I know of. He doesn't do the instructor stuff very often -- I would appreciate knowing if there are any others, or if Jan plans any instructor courses in the near future. PM me if you want his number.

Bill Russell is in Bridgeport, but sometimes teaches at Winchester in Ft Worth. He is very proud of his courses.

Jan Heath at Grand Prairie Gun Club is much more economical. And, he's a hoot!

I recently took basic instructor, home firearm safety, and basic pistol from Dan Graeber of the Trainers Group in DFW ( http://www.trainersgroup.net/ ). He teaches at Elm fork.

I put a review of the class in the General section: viewtopic.php?f=128&t=58316

I don't know about the other options in the area, but I was really happy with Dan.

I absolutely agree with you. I have had a couple of "bad" TCs, but didn't realize it until I got into one of Dan's classes. There was a LOT of basic information that had been left out. I worked with Dan to get up to speed on the areas that were negligent--and have since taken several classes with him--and if I can help it, won't go to another TC
