UK-Two Female Cops Lured into Grenade Ambush

A police spokesperson told ABC News that the man arrested on suspicion of their murder, Dale Cregan, 29, turned himself in around midday Tuesday, allegedly confessing to the crime after he walked into Tameside police station.
We can’t keep him past 11 o’clock tonight unless we get a special warrant for another 24 hours, so we expect him to be arrested or released sometime later today,” the police spokesperson said.
What the heck is wrong with the UK?
How the heck can someone confess to a crime like this and the law not alow them to keep them locked up?
I have to travel over there for work in Jan for 6 weeks, and this dosn't give me a warm fuzzy at all.

five officers had been shot dead in the past decade.
According to the Associated Press, FBI figures show that 544 U.S. law enforcement officers were killed in the same period.
I would imagine that the US has considerably more officers than the UK does. It would be more informative to give the percentage of officers shot during that period.
It would also be interesting to compare the relative number of officers killed by any means.

As too how they could even contemplate letting the guy go, I can't imagine.

Out on bail for 2 other GRENADE murders, confesses to 2 more and they might have to release him. The Brits have gone gob smacking bonkers.

However, if someone had killed another while DEFENDING themselves, especially with a firearm, they would probably be detained indefinitely.
Can't have those subjects thinking they can fight back.
