Each concealed-handgun course (a $100 value) begins with an eight-hour classroom session that partially satisfies the state's training requirements for a concealed-handgun license, or CHL. Students complete the practical component of their CHL training with two hours on the range

I thought the law said 10 hours of class time.
And really, it takes 2 hours on the range to shoot the required 50 rounds? (maybe including driving, if you have to drive 1/2 hour or more each way?????)

From DPS FAQ page
"An original (first time) CHL applicant must complete a minimum 10 hour class, taught by a DPS certified CHL instructor. The class includes classroom and a proficiency demonstration (shooting)."

So yes, the range time is part of the class time that must be a minimum of 10 hours. The initial class I attended was at the instructors home. There was at least 15 of us. It took us 15 or 20 minutes to get to the range and another 15 or 20 minutes for everyone to get paid up. There were only 5 or 6 lanes available so we went in groups. When it was all said and done, it easily took us 2 hours to complete the shooting portion and return to the instructors home.

On edit: we were done with everything easily in 10 hours. And, based on what I have read on this forum about other classes, my class was excellent.

Regardless, if an instructor hasn't communicated what needs to be communicated in 8 hrs of verbal instruction, then the instructor is not capable of communicating the information to begin with.

The way it was explained in my instructor class was that not everyone is training the whole time you are at the range. 2 hours seems a bit long.

And I do not agree with your last statement... for one, there are too many variables.

Seems like this one is resolved very easily - if you think there is an issue, send the link to DPS.

On the premises where a high school, collegiate, or professional sporting or interscholastic event is taking place
On the premises of a correctional facility
On the premises of a hospital or nursing home (unless licensee has written authorization)
In an amusement park
On the premises of a church, synagogue, or other place of worship
At any meeting of a governmental entity"

more people should do this to keep the standards high

But, if you have the people who are not shooting act as extra eyes....pseudo safety officers, they are also learning, so it can be counted. If they are milling around in the parking lot--then no.

This was suggested as a way to get the people who do not have to qualify(i.e. military) and don't want to shoot to still get their full 10 hours(they have to still have 10 hours even if they don't shoot.

That's why forwarding it to DPS is such a brilliant idea. The instructors who are following the rules get an extra student in class and maybe never find out they were audited. The ones who are cutting corners will get squared away, one way or another.
