A Florida school district is considering a plan to install surveillance cameras on cafeteria trash cans to monitor what kids are throwing away – after they discovered that students were tossing out their federally-mandated fruit and vegetables.

This country has gone totally bananas.
There is an old joke where a guy says to his buddy, I think there are only two sane people left in this country, me and you, and sometimes I wonder about you.

Sounds like a good idea actually. This way they will have documented proof that the federally mandated meal plan is wasting so much food/money.

But they will surely manipulate the meaning of the results - "When we give them potatoes, they don't eat veggies, so no more potatoes."

Because it would make no sense to put that funding towards books, computers and supplies to help their education!

How about just ask the people who empty the trash, "Hey, what's in there?"

Because they can't trust the janitor. The kids like him too much, and are in cahoots with him.

The job of public schools is no longer education. Look how little money they spend teaching the fundamentals and how much money they spend on "other stuff" and it's obvious their priorities. Worse, the anti-educators have the unmitigated gall to ask voters to approve school bonds because Johnny can't read. As if the problem was too little money in the budget instead of too much money wasted on junk. Or worse, money spent to prevent a useful education, like segregating some immigrant kids to deny them English immersion, when it's proven immersion is the best way to build fluency in a language.

And at the end of the day we will have spent millions only to find out, yes many children do not like veggies, and they would rather go hungry than eat them. A mom of two could have told you that

When I was in the 4th grade, my family lived in Paris, France. I was put into the French public school system. I
understood a few words of French (my mother is French), but I didn't speak it at all, and I didn't understand very much of it. Inside of 3 weeks, I was chattering in French like a little monkey, and now, 52 years later, I am still comfortably conversant in French.......because of that forced immersion in it. And I'm the rule, rather than the exception. Kids pick up languages like sponges............except when teachers get in the way and try to protect them from learning.

Except for ketchup on fries.
