I'm sorry. Welcome to the forum. At least you didn't ask which caliber is best for SD.

I think most folks that buy off the shelf for the range are using either Federal or WWB (Winchester White Box) these days. The Federal is cheaper, but I think the WWB is cleaner. The first time I shot a bunch of the Federal stuff I noticed a bunch of little black spots on my forearms from unburned powder. The gun was much dirtier than usual, although not as dirty when using some of that Blazer ammo.

As far as PP ammo I'm guessing that most using .45s are going for that big 230 grain bullet.

Call me cheap but i run through about 150 rounds a week of monarch at the range, its cheap and not to dirty, I've never had a round not fire and steel is even cheaper than brass if you don't want to load your own. P.P. Hornady Critical Duty or Critical Defence(Zombie Max) all the way!! American Rifleman did a piece on Critical Duty in September 2012 its the tops
I carry it in my 9mm. every day .

I reload my practice ammo. In .45 ACP I load 230 grain bullets. For personal protection in .45 ACP I use 230 gr Federal HST. I use CorBon DPX in 9MM and 40 S&W. My .38 Special carry load is either Federal Nyclad 125 gr or, Gold Dot 135 GR +P Short Barrel. In my .357 magnum I carry full power Remington or Federal 125 gr JHP. How clean or dirty a load is isn't all that important to me because cleaning a gun after use is just part of shooting.

Federal is much dirtier than WWB. PMC Bronze is pretty nice and is cheaper than WWB. As far as SD ammo, HST, Ranger T, Gold Dot - they all work really well.

Disassembling and cleaning your guns is half the fun, it gives me and the Mrs. a chance to talk about how we shot that day and what we need to improve for next time. And it makes the whole house smell like Hoppes #9 all day, I love it.

The Winchester white box I get at the Alvin Walmart must be made in a different part of the world than what yall are talkin about. Federal has been much cleaner for me, at least in 45. I have quit buying WWB at all because of dirt and FTFs. And the guy at Walmart backs me up.

Interesting. You don't notice any powder on your sleeves after shooting several rounds of the Federal stuff?

Well, I usually shoot with short sleeves, but the gun is cleaner with Federals. WWB is not the dirtiest stuff I ever shot, Blazer probably was. The 100 rd boxes of WWB 230gr. HP is even worse than WWB FMJ for some reason. The ramp gets so bad it starts to have problems.

I've been shooting UMC for practice out of my USP45, and it doesn't seem too dirty. Big fan of Lawman though.

For SD I've got Gold Dots and Golden Saber.

When I first noticed it I was in short sleeves too. I had powder all over my forearms and didn't know what it was at first. Someone else had to tell me what it was since this was the first time I had noticed this.

WWB FMJ has been much cleaner than the Federal, UMC, and Blazer for me. Although, I have not shot any Blazer since switching to .45ACP.

Around here in Ft. Worth finding the Federal value ammo is almost impossible. I did manage to find 3 value pack 100 round boxes and I can report as well that its very dirty ammo... I was in short sleeves and had powder all over my arms. For me for the range I stick with WWB from Wal-Mart, its $3 per 100 pack more expensive but I like it more.

As far as PD I use the Federal HST 147gr duiring the colder times, and usually in the warmer months Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P in 9mm in my XDm.
