New Dem ad: 'Ain't nobody gonna take' my guns away

By John Brandt

Published October 16, 2012 | FoxNews.com

Democratic Rep. John Barrow is packing heat in a new ad touting his National Rifle Association endorsement.

In the commercial, the Georgia congressman shows off a pistol his grandfather used "to stop a lynching" and a rifle his father had "just to keep us safe." The commercial ends with Barrow closing the bolt on the rifle and saying that he approves this message because "these are my guns now, and ain't nobody gonna take them away."

Barrow is in the fight of his life, as the redistricting process has made his 12th District more Republican.

The few Democrats who receive NRA endorsements typically promote them with verve. One of the most memorable ads of the 2010 election cycle featured Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., taking "dead aim" at a copy of a cap and trade energy bill and shooting it with a rifle.

I don't make a habit of defending democrats but, he is consistant in voting for 2A rights. Voted no to Obamacare. Voted with the R's on Fast and furious against Eric holder... Seems like he should just make a clean break from the dark side.

It would be rather interesting to ask him, 'Why are you still a Democrat?" (I think it's a smarter question than, "Why aren't you a Republican?")

It's sad there are yellow dog republicans who would vote against him based on party instead of issues.

That entirely misses the reality of politics. An individual democrat that is OK on certain issues still counts as a democrat when it comes to which party controls the House or Senate, with the attendant power that goes to being the House Speaker instead of the Minority Leader, all the key committee chairmanships, and committee representation.

The so-called "Blue Dog Democrats" may have had certain conservatives tendencies to make them more electable in their home districts, but their party membership is still what contributes to the risk of putting total idiots like Pelosi in charge.

It has apparently never occured to Ameer that a republican might oppose a democrat based on principle.

Ameer has made many posts in the past which are disparaging of republicans. I assume that he is either a libertarian or a democrat.....either way, he has no love lost for republicans, which would explain his "yellow dog" reference. So if you are a republican, take that into account when trying to understand his meaning.

Me personally, I'm a libertarian leaning republican.....meaning that I don't swallow ALL of the libertarian platform, but I do like a lot of it. But that said, I think that the libertarian party is largely irrelevant except as a means of helping to ensure the election of democrats. The libertarian that I have the MOST respect for is Wayne Allen Root, who recently joined the republican party to try and lead it in a more libertarian direction. I guess he's a yellow dog now too.

We are of the same mind, TAM. I certainly hope we can find some room to get the GOP to have broader conversations on the true roots of the party. It could begin with the party not using a disparaging term for people that don't agree with every plank in the party platform, which only serves to alienate people. Personally, I would love to see Gary Johnson return to the GOP as well.

The parties will eat their own. If a member of either party doesnt fall in line with the party dictates, he will be deprived of state & national party contributions. Also his fellow party members will gang up on him and vote against all his bills so that he doesnt have a record of accomplishment to base his re-election on. Beltway politics are as corrupt as the mafia, and in the senate, just as vicious.

There is absolutely no chance of us reforming the congress short of rebellion.

I have read that when a newly elected comes in with the goal of reforming the system, both parties will gang up on him and will contribute to his opponent, regardless of party affiliation.
Machiavelli said it so well:
And let it be noted that there is no more delicate matter to take in hand, nor more dangerous to conduct, nor more doubtful in its success, than to set up as a leader in the introduction of changes. For he who innovates will have for his enemies all those who are well off under the existing order of things, and only the lukewarm supporters in those who might be better off under the new. This lukewarm temper arises partly from the fear of adversaries who have the laws on their side and partly from the incredulity of mankind, who will never admit the merit of anything new, until they have seen it proved by the event.

I'm in the same boat. I've taken to referring to myself as a "Republitarian".

I use the term "conservatarian"...a conservative on a lot of things, but with an eye toward small "l" libertarian ideas. More personal freedom, less government intrusion into daily lives while maintaining a strong national defense in light of the FACT that some countries/groups out there will hate us no matter how much we simply "leave them alone".
