My wife's application hit a snag. Here's the scenario:
She was born to a U.S. Air Force airman in Torrejon AFB, Spain. Both mom and dad were and are U.S. Citizens. Her birth certificate is a Spanish B.C. My wife has her original passport from when she was a child while they were stationed there (ca. 1972: don't tell her I divulged that ), the Spanish Birth certificate, her social security card and that's it. She is a full U.S. Citizen.

Because we put on her app that she was born abroad, they want further proof of citizenship. They listed U.S. Passport, U.S. Certificate of birth abroad (doesn't have), and a host of other immigration docs that she doesn't or wouldn't have. We sent a copy of her now expired passport as proof. Will this suffice? I thought i'd ask here first before calling them and being placed on eternal hold

If they had included that on the checklist we would have submitted it at that time. A U.S. certificate of birth abroad takes at least 2 monts and $50. When she got a copy of her SS card years ago, they accepted the old passport as proof. I hope this works.

The expired passport worked!

Not only that but my wife's status changed today to background complet/manufacture pending with citizenship/passport holder received.


That's a whole week faster than me. She sent her packet a week after me.

Great news! I'm glad it worked out for your wife.

INS used to accept expired passports as proof of identity and employment authorization for an I-9 but now they require unexpired documents, so I wasn't sure which way DPS would go. It's nice to hear DPS was reasonable about it, especially when they already know who she is from the DL they issued her.
