10 year license?

Two different CHL holders have said something to me about a 10 yr period that has me scratchin my head. First one told me he has had his for over 10 years so he never has to renew, after 10 years it is permanent. Today someone told me after 3 renewals the license becomes a 10 year license. Apparently some instructor around here must have said something about a 10 year period.... any idea what in the renewal process may be getting them confused?

are they talking about a TEXAS CHL?
Or could they be talking about some other state?

Texas does not (obviously) have a 10 year, or permanent license

They are talking about TX...and you are right, we don't...but wondering what it could be coming from since 2 different folks have claimed the same...

After the third renewal the requirement for taking a renewal class is every other time or 10 years you will still have to renew every five years. Lots of folks, including instructors, don't understand the concept. :headscratch

MoJo - I thought it was after the second renewal. I just finished my second renewal and I thought I was good to go as far as taking the class for the next 10 years.

It is after the second renewal, on the third renewal, effectively becoming a ten year license. However, I'm not sure if it really is a ten year license or it is still 5y, but you're just not required to take the class, but do still have to do all the rest of the paperwork.

Yes, you still have to renew in 5 years but no class CHL-100 required for the 3rd renewal.

When the 4th comes, you gotta renew and take another class & CHL-100.

That's the way it is now......by the time we get to the 4th renewal things may change again.

It sounds like one of those problems that fixes itself. One way or another.

Thanks for the info guys. The thing I like about the no class is no paper work (CHL100) has be to submitted for the renewal - just apply online and let DPS take care of the rest of it.

I am aware of the renewal process, I am saying these folks..one thought after 10 years you never had to get another CHL, and the other thought you only had to get a license every 10 years.... Just trying to figure what would make anyone who has gone through multiple classes think such.

Sorry about that. The question wasn't is this true, but rather where did they get this information from. My guess would be relatively new instructors that didn't remember that from class, didn't ask in the first place, or haven't come here to find out the correct answer.

The license is a 5 year license. You must renew your license every 5 year. After the 2nd renewal you only take the class once every 10 years. You pay the state but not an instructor.

Your CHL is recognized by BATF as an alternative ID. When you buy a firearm from an FFL he does not have to do the background check on you. You still need to fill out all paper work. For the CHL to be recognized by BATF the State must do a background check on you every 5 years. And so it is a 5 year license.

Some folks hear without listening. Then they apply the incorrect conclusions to what they didn't listen to.
