I'm not very familiar with guns (except for mine); so hoping someone can answer this for me. A friend has a S&W Model 39, 8 capacity single-stack magazine. Does anyone make a higher capacity magazine for this model?

A quick search of Pro Mag's website only has an 8 round magazine for that particular firearm. I'm not that knowledgeable about magazines though, maybe someone else knows some other magazine manufactures and can give you their names for you to look up.

The model 39 is a single-stack 9mm, which is why the grip is nice and slim. The downside is that factory magazines can only hold 8 rounds, and magazines holding more rounds will have to simply stick out the bottom of the gun.

What Russ said. I own a 908s. Which is the value line version of the 3913. It takes the same mags as the 3913. A 3913 could also take a mag from a 909 which is the value line of the 39 series with a longer grip and 4inch barrel. A 3913/908 has a 3.5 barrel and a shorter grip. Here is a link to the mags. It only holds one more round in the mag for 9+1.

Edit: Pro mag makes a 10 round for the single stack 3rd gen. So 10 +1 is about the best your going to do.

M-39 and M-59 were made at the same time. M-59 was the high capacity. Both had reputations for being a little borderline for reliability. M-39 was first. First made in the 50s I think.

Second and Third generation S&W autos in this series had much better reputations for reliability. Throughout these generations the 39 series continued the single stack model and the 59 and 69 (compact model) were the high(er) capacity double stacks.

My 908 hasn't hung up yet in over 1500 rounds. Runs better then my P95.

Yes, the 908 is considered one of the third generation autos.
