Brother Mugged

My youngest brother was mugged by a man who ran out of the alley and knocked him to the ground, stealing his cell phone. My brother is only 13 years old and the police believe the man was targeting him because he normally is playing/carrying his Nintendo DS. This happened in Richardson TX. Be careful out there, even in your own neighborhood.

We often talk about being situationally aware.
Walking with your face buried in an electronic hypnosis machine is not being situationally aware.

Sorry to hear about your brother. I'm glad it sounds like he wasn't seriously injured.

; furthermore, Anygun's admonition is neither age nor nor is it gender specific.

Agreed, he needs his priorities adjusted. He will hopefully learn something from this experience.

Folks of all ages do this now-a-days with their smart phones. I see it numerous times a day.
Glad your brother wasn't seriously injured.

Yes, we all need to be situationally aware - that said, let's cut a little slack for a 13 year CHILD.

If a CHILD is allowed to go out on their own, whatever age, daylight or dark, they need to understand the dangers and learn to be situationally aware. So, there is no 'slack' that should be cut to make sure they do their best to keep safe.

Of course you are but the dangers of this world are there and they won't grant any slack. That is the point and like it or not, that is how it is. Nobody is suggesting beeating the kid for what happened but rather helping him to learn from so that hopefully, it doesnt happen again because next time the consequences could be worse.

We're all basically in agreement about situational awareness, (which I stated earlier) but, in my opinion and it's just that, an opinion, I'm suggesting a little sympathy for a 13 year old child who's head isn't constantly on a swivel looking out for all the evil in the world...sheesh!
In other words, a 13 year old isn't as vigilant as an adult, no matter how much you drill them about situational awareness and if they get hurt because they fail in this, they're to be forgiven.
That's my opinion - if it differs from yours, no problem.

I agree that kids won't be as vigilant. Part of the problem these days IMO is too many parents cut kids too much slack and they don't learn responsibility or vigilance. I think they need to be taught more.
Bottom line, if you let an adolescent out on their own, then they need to be taught to be alert and watching for dangers. Kids learn from lessons, hopefully he learned from this one. Luckily this one ended with no one being hurt, just loss of property.

200 years ago a13 year old boy would be considered a man and expected to go into to woods alone and bring home dinner. If he wasn't aware of his surroundings he would go hungry or maybe not come home at all. I don't see why it should be any different today other than for different reasons!
Sorry he got mugged but I bet he will learn from this with some encouragement in the right direction.

You can. I won't. I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't developed a Swivel Neck while still in grade school.
