Starting the renewal process online

My CHL will expire in September and today I recieved a letter from DPS with a PIN and instructions for starting the application online. I went far enough to see that they will want my SS#, TDL#, and credit card info. I will probably go with a full service class that provides everything for the renewal so:

Will it expedite anything by doing the online bit or should I just take the class and go from there? I see some other threads here indicating that I might still be waiting for DPS to send me something when I'm ready to take the class. Will this be a problem if it happens?

If I do it online are they going to hit my credit card for the entire fee immediately? I don't have a problem with this if it means I don't have to fool with a money order or personal check, just curious.

What else should I know about the online process?

It depends, you could wait 2-4 weeks to get your application back online or If you take your class the instructor can give you the application but will have a different application number. I took the class but had not received my application, the instructor gave me a new app but I could not send it in because my name was attached to the online app. i had to wait several more weeks, gave up, went to Austin and they corrected the number issue. O course i forgot my certificate number so Feb 5th called them back with the number and March 5th had my card. They need to make some administrative changes

huaco,
I did my renewal online Jan. 4th. They mailed my stuff Jan. 9th. That part went smooth. I got it a few days later.

DPS charged my credit card the full amount, $70, the day I did the online application (1/4/07).

I just recently completed the course and mailed in my packet, registered/return receipt requested.

By law DPS has 45 days to process a renewal. I have a little more than twice that amount of time until my license expires.

I don't expect any problems. I would have taken the course sooner if I had been able.

Regards, OE
