Our Youth

I teach Religious Education (Confirmation) to high school sophomores and juniors at our parish. I have been doing this for 4 years now and I have to say it is both a challenge and a blast. I love my students.

Yesterday evening was test night. I was seated at a table with 7 of my students reviewing their tests at the end of class. Most of the rest had left for home.

The subject of firearms came up. Somewhere they learned I am a gun guy. I am at a loss as to how this happened.

Anyway, one young man asked about concealed carry and I answered some questions for him. The remainder of the talk focused on the Sandy Hook incident. In the middle of the discussion one of the young ladies asked me if I had my license and I said yes. She said she felt better knowing she was protected. I told her that it was illegal for me to carry unless authorized by the school administrator.

She then asked me what would happen if a maniac did the same thing at our parish. I told her I would do everything in my power to destroy the perp and protect them.

I am considering approaching the administrator and asking permission to carry.

I will keep you informed.

I believe there is hope for America in our youth. I believe that this generation actually thinks more about what is going on than we realize and can see the inconsistencies in life. Not all of them are buried in video games.

Just thought I would share my experience.

Good luck with that. I know that the attitudes of both private schools that my kids have gone to are about the same as most public schools.

I saw a poll the other day of high school and college students that claimed 60% of them plan to buy a gun at some time in the future. It was conducted by American University in Washington, D.C.

http://www.american.edu/media/news/2012 ... udents.cfm
One-third of young people reported growing up with a gun in the household and 36 percent reported being “very worried” about gun violence. However, nearly 40 percent of participants planned to own a gun when they have their own household, and an additional 20 percent were contemplating it.

I'm confused. you're teaching confirmation, that's a church class. it's taking place at night. is this taking place in a church or a school? why would you need permission from a school guy?

I'm obviously missing something....easily done the last couple of months ;-)

It is using private school facilities - classrooms etc. The administrators are considered school staff. I am a staff catechist - teacher.

This is what we're fighting for.
Anyone else get a lump in their throat reading this line?

Our priest is a gun guy, has a charity "Game Dinner" once a year. I couldn't imagine him authorizing concealed carry though, could be wrong, shoot I'm gonna ask.
