I read that THIS is the reason that the original BATFE operation to track guns to the cartels during the Bush administration was quickly abandoned. Because they DID put chips on/in the firearms, and tried to track them down. The bad guys reportedly found the chips pretty quickly and disabled/removed them. Luckily, it was a very small number of firearms and the chips were active long enough that the BGs were caught and the weapons were retrieved. However, because of this, the idea was shelved.

You don't stop violence by locating guns. You stop it by locating felons.

It was worse than that. The batteries that ran the GPS chips ran out after a few days.
