A bank of capacitors between your power supply and the coil works really well to keep the burning down. Just have to make sure to get a switch that can handle the immense current from shorting out .5F at 120V.

Built a single stage model about 10 years ago. Used a .75" steel ball, fun stuff.

Reminds me of "the good old days" in the Texas Tech EE lab in the late 70's/ early 80's.
