Thank you for contacting me regarding federal firearms laws. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

As a strong proponent of the Second Amendment, I believe it is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's constitutional right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self-protection. Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.

It is encouraging that the Supreme Court has upheld the will of our Founders and re-affirmed the ideals our country was established upon. The Supreme Court's decision in District of Columbia v. Heller provides a greater guarantee that Americans' Constitutional rights remain secure from federal government intrusion. I was proud to sign an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in that case stating an individual’s right to bear arms is fundamental. This historic ruling continues to have implications far beyond the District of Columbia. In 2010, the Supreme Court decided in McDonald v. City of Chicago to strike down the arbitrary gun ban in Chicago—and thereby affirm that the Second Amendment safeguards against state and local encroachments on the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

As a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Attorney General, I have firsthand knowledge of crime-fighting policies that work, and I believe that citizens' Second Amendment rights should not be restricted because of the actions of criminals. Rather, we must focus our attention on the source of violent crime: criminals who use firearms to commit crimes. I believe that strictly enforcing the law—and meting out tougher sentences for career criminals and those who use firearms when committing crimes—will reduce crime more effectively than gun or equipment bans, which primarily serve to take firearms away from law-abiding citizens.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to protect our Second Amendment rights. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

I got the same email I do have issue with

such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self-protection

as this shows a limiting factor once you start enumerating a list of valid purposes you start limiting its reach.

My point is when you make a list of uses, well that list can be made longer or shorter at somebody Else's whim, would you want DiFi to enumerate her list. The RKBA is just that, no limits listed there.

I have been a lot since the July 19 rally in Austin. . . Patterson wasn't on my radar before that. He won me over.

Yep. I sat on my couch and watched a movie with my AR last week. Figure since we can't find ammo to shoot, I still need to spend time with her.

He needs to add that to his list.

Didn't take him long to become part of the machine. Would love to see him replaced with an actual conservative.

Whether you like Cruz or not, he was out in public right away, talking about the 2nd Amendment. Cornyn has be publically silent on the subject. Permit me a slightly off-topic tirade on that part of the subject.

Feinstein will publicly announce her AWB bill today with much fanfare. It is all showboating. Harry Reid has already said that he won't risk Dem seats in red States by forcing his members to vote on a bill that will not get through the House. That isn't stopping Feinstein.

Cornyn could have taken the opposite approach. He could have used the materials that we all have from John Lott, etc. to have publicly attack the unlawful Chicago gun control laws, the fact that Chicago violence is blamed on law abiding IL citizens when most of the gun crime is gangs supported by the corrupt Dem machine but he hasn't and won't. That fact that he sits on his backside and doesn't attempt to counter the gun control promoters makes it that much easier for gun control crowd to gain ground. Biden is out on a promotion tour while all of the GOP sits on their hands.

C..O...W..A...R...D...S! You either believe in the 2nd Amendment or you don't. Placating citizens with an e-mail (I got the same one in the OP) does not do anything to protect it.

There, I feel better now. My hat is off the the NRA. They shouldn't have to carry our water alone.

I am afraid that I reached the same conclusion as suthdj when I read that part of this otherwise outstanding letter. Narrowing our right to such a specific focus is a great way to claim non-existent limits.

I received the same letter from Cornyn awhile back. I am not impressed. He is not a reliable resource.

Cruz has come out swinging.

I called them both this week. I spoke wit one of Cornyn's aids and basically told him that COrnyn needs to shed the RINO clothing and hug the conservative mantra. I reminded him that we Texicans were watching him very closely for any signs of weakness and I used that term. No more concessions. No more infringement.

BTW, I do fully support AnygunAnywhere mentra, Bare no limits even fully-auto ban should be repealed. Why, in Lebanon, you can have an RPG or AAA guns if you want. Now criminals and felons, should be still face stiff penalties and bared from owning firearms.
