I'm never sure how they come up with those numbers. I've done several FTF transactions that are not on anyone's radar.

I went to the CDC which is supposed to be responsible for the data and found this about it.

Data for a state may be collected directly by the state health department or through a contractor. Fourteen state health departments collected their data in-house; forty contracted data collection to university survey research centers or commercial firms in 2002

In other words, there is no consistent data collection State to State.

I'm not buying that the CA percentage is higher than NY. There are a lot of hunters in rural NY.

from bottom of article, I would not really trust the numbers as if they asked me or my wife the answer would be no, we have no guns., Plus the answers are from 2002. I would guess we are higher than only 9%

2002? The numbers have changed significantly in the last 6 weeks!

This other article has the same 35.9% number, but it shows TX being 30th in gun ownership.

One thing strucked me as odd. "

Kentucky requires monthly NICS checks on concealed weapons that causes inflated numbers relative to the other states.

Does that mean that in Kentucky CHL'ers get a NICS check once a month?

If a study were based on NICS checks, I'd expect it to be somewhat lower for TX because CHLs get to skip the NICS.

I don't believe the numbers --there are too many incentives for low balling the estimates, and other factors that tend to limit getting correct information in the direction of under estimation. I'm not saying where I work is representative of the general population, and the numbers are no doubt lower in the major urban areas, but I don't even know anyone who doesn't own more than one gun. Also, how are "owners" counted? When my kids were young, each had his own guns, but the kids and wife also shared in shooting "my" guns. I consider the ownership between my wife and I to be "communal." So, would we have counted as one gun owner, two gun owners, or four?

I think you have hit on something. Of the people I am around most of the time - friends and coworkers, I can think of very few who do not own at least one firearm. Most own more than one.
