Question for old timer handloaders..!!

I've been around the reloading block a few times but have never tried to make 22 lr rat shot from 22lr ammo.
Anyone tried it?

I've made 38 special and 357 mag rat shot that works very well, and have even made some 45acp rat shot from cut down 308/243 brass with a special forming die set from RCBS.

But heck, I'm setting here in my shop, I open the door to the other part of the building that is mostly storage and notice a couple of mice scampering around. I thought I had some 22 rat shot that I BOUGHT a long time back, but the package was empty....DontCha hate that..!!!

Problem is, if I could even find any in this crazy time we are in, they would be sooooo high for a box of 10 or so...!! ( I've got about 20,000 or so 22 lr's in the 550 box )
Somewhere in the vast library of the INTERNET, I saw an article where someone took a 22 long rifle shell and pulled the bullet and replaced it with a small over powder card and filled it with #9 or #12 shot and crimped it with an over shot card ( made of thin cardboard) and they said it worked.....But I have NOT been able to find the article..!!!
( Basically, thats how I make the 38 rat shot shells with from #4 to #9 shot. #4's hit HARD )

Time is not a problem for me...I like working on strange stuff as long as I keep all my fingers and eyes ok....!!!!! :thumbs2:

Anyone got any ideas that have tried anything like this??
( I know it's a little crazy...But what isn't? growing flowers? )

I'll get it sorted out eventually, they just cost too much for 10 - 22 rat shot shells....was about $1.00 each...!!!!! ( WOW) :cryin

instead of trying to crimp a "hot round", would a dab of silicon sealer over the cardboard possibly do the trick?

Interesting project

Never tried it myself.

Duke Venturino has an article on handgun shotshell for shooting snakes in the current issue of American Handgunner that you would enjoy. Use the link and go to page 50.

http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMG ... er/AHMA13/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Requires a name and email address to view. There is no checking of validity, so put in Porky Pig is you don't want to put your name in.

Me too - those cases can be sensitive.
I do understand. I like my fingers and eye's very much and always provide protection.
Have used Plexiglas press shields I made for other projects....

I would not just grab some pliers and a hammer and get after it. There was a genuine article on this in ones of the older gun mags somewhere....They have the 38/357 version in American Handgunner somewhere....

Just wondering, almost everything has been done at one time or another.
Some of them are not here to tell us how it went!!!!!!

Thanks guys

And, I am certain that with a proper amount of perserverence, it is possible to produce a .22 shot load.

However, I would hesitate to do too much fooling around with a rim-fire case.
Not too crazy about rim fire cases either.
I laughed at your reply in a good way.....sometimes it does get a little boring and I have done a few crazy things at times.
Speaking of woods..I just had about a 4' dia. Oak tree fall and just miss my shop...actually it brushed against it..!!! Got insurance, but you know how that is..!!!! Then I'd have to rebuild all I just rebuilt all over..!!! No Thanks.
