I have read over several threads on here and I am still confused. If visiting a school, can I legally leave my weapon secured in my car? I believe the answer is yes, but want to make sure. Part B to the question is can I legally store my weapon in my car if I am an employee of the school?

Part A, yes if you have a CHL from the state the school is in.

Part B, I don't think so because school employees are not exempted in the Parking Lot law.

The short answers per Texas state law...YES. And YES... you can legally, store your weapon in your car if you are an employee of the school. And the school can legally fire you if it is contrary to their policy, but you wouldn't be breaking the law.

Thanks, I think my mental hang up was with the definition of "premises" in 46.03. I have seen "Gun Free Zone" signs posted at the entrance of the school property, I guess this speaks for the buildings.

part A, if you are not an employee of the school you may leave your weapon locked in your vehicle

part B, if you are an employee of the school the parking lot law does not cover you and you are subject to termination if you do leave a weapon in your car

Correct. The 46.03 definition of "premises" comes from 46.035 and specifically excludes parking lots, grounds, etc.
