Urban wildlife protection. Bobcats among us...

We all know the famous Perry/Coyote fistfight....
We continue to see predators in our neighborhoods, coyotes and bobcats. I've seen coyotes; these bobcats and their great hissing escapade were a few blocks away yesterday.

I always carry on my dog walks, the greenbelts really let the wildlife move about... I guess the issue, and it is even more "one in the pipe" than a person, a bobcat would be on you before you could blink if it wanted to. I don't want to mess with a housecat!!
Did you see this one in the DMN today?

The" sound effects" are the best!

A cat fight caught on camera in a Carrollton neighborhood has residents wary of letting their pets outside unsupervised.

The standoff between two bobcats happened in the Highlands neighborhood, just off Marsh Lane and Kelly Boulevard. Kevin Martuscello and his son caught the two growling cats on video and uploaded it to YouTube on Monday.

“That was my first time to ever see one,” Martuscello told Fox 4 News. It was amazing we saw two at one time and they did that interaction.”

Bobcats are common across much of the state, but it’s rare to capture two together in an urban setting, said John Padgett, a game warden for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Bobcats are not seasonal animals and can be found year round in urban areas where there’s cover for them to hide. The predatory cats weight between 20 to 25 pounds and are mostly nocturnal — though the stare-down caught on video happened in the daytime.

Padgett suggests keeping an eye on small pets because bobcats normally feed on smaller animals. He also said they don’t normally attack humans.

“We’re not on their menu,” he said.

Great video. I've seen this a lot on wfaa.com in Plano, Frisco, and McKinney. . . basically every month there's a few 911 or animal control calls about bobcats followed by a press release from the cities saying they won't be removing bobcats and to just leave them alone.

Eventually, in a residential neighborhood like that one those cats will lose their fear of humans (or a human will eventually do something stupid, like feed them, or mock them verbally from a car window). And Carrollton isn't exactly the sprawling edge of civilization. . . it's fairly insulated by miles of other suburbs.

Here are two different times I caught a bobcat on my security cam in Plano. Have seen one a couple of times during the day as well but no video.

I grew up out in the country on the SW side of Houston, out near Brazos bend state park and I have only seen 1 bobcat in the 20yrs of country living. I only saw it for a few seconds and it was gone. I can't even begin to think about one much less two in a neighborhood that close to people. To me it looks like those two have already lost their fear of humans or they are starving or sick. Those two didn't look like they have missed a meal and they were not acting ill. If they aren't scared of you, you better be scared of them. Even a house cat can do unrepairable damage to a fleshy human. I would hate to see a wound from a REAL cat.

To refresh this topic, I had Bob the Cat back in my driveway Tuesday morning about 5:45. Here is the video.

I just looked at my security cam footage again this morning and he (or a reasonable facsimile) was back again last night about 10:45. I will post that video when I get it uploaded to YouTube

I am OK with him being around. Hopefully he will keep the mouse and rat population down. :thumbs2:

I live in Duncanville and we see coyotes all the time and have seen bobcats around. I feel bad for the ignorant folks that put out missing cat signs in our neighborhood.

I saw couple coyoutes bouncing around in a corn on the west side of 75 on Exchange Parkway, Allen TX. It was reported of sighting of bob the little mad cat near Lucas/Allen/Parker area.

If I see a bob cat and kids are around, I most likely dispatching them if the Animal Control does not show up promptly.

We live in the San Marcos area (a bit south) last year we had a bobcat come up on the front porch to get herself a chicken dinner. Dogs heard the noise our Catahoula wrestled with her and chased her up a tree! She no longer hunts! But the pelt is real nice!
