Don't we have the same rights to use deadly force against 4-legged threats like this?

Is deadly force justified to save the life of a 4-legged victim?

I think that you could make the case that pets would fall under the protection of property statues. If your dog had some readily identifiable wounds I would guess it could work well in court. In those situations keeping the two bodies separate in the sights might be the trick. Their bodies would generally be flying in all directions as your dog tried to fight/evade, I would think.

I found this to be especially telling and indicative of our dysfunctional society:
One witness was afraid to do anything for fearing a lawsuit from the pits owners.
Texas self-defense law provides immunity from lawsuits in legitimate cases.

Of course you have every right to intervene, at which point you might be threatened and then it's game on.

If I could safely engage without injuring my own dog, I would do so without hesitation. I've almost had to do so a couple of times now with my neighbor's new mutt. As others have already said, it would fall under defense of property.
