Quick and easy for somebody.
We live close enough to walk or bike to the range. Does one need a CHL to transport the weapons to and from the range? Do the weapons have to be unloaded, locked, in a case etc.. if you don't have a CHL?

No chl is needed. Carry your long long rifles as you wish. Legally e Wa you can open carry at the range if allowed by range rules.

Sorry FishInTx, the law states nothing about loaded, unloaded or locked. You can't carry a handgun on or about your person off of property under your control without a CHL unless you are directly enroute to your vehicle, Per PC46.02.
Now as long as you have your CHL you're good to go

I have read the CHL-16 cover to cover a few times over the years, and there is no way that I can remember all of the lwas.

Walking no, but I do believe that Texas treats a bicycle as a vehicle. I think, and again, IANAL, if they are concealed on the bike, not on your person, you would be fine.

Any lawyers have a different view?

Since a cyclist is supposed to ad hear to the same laws as cars and motorcycles just strengthens the point.

According to PC §46.15:

a) I walk from my residence to the gun range - I'm legal.
b) I walk from my residence to the gun shop, pick up my gun, and walk to the gun range - legal, as long as a stop or stops along the way are part of "en route."
c) If stops along the way negate "en route" (the stop at the gun shop ended the original "en route") then - I'm illegal
d) If stops along the way do not negate "en route" then I can leave my residence in the morning, stop anywhere I choose, as long as I end up at a gun range. If so, I'm legal to carry all day, with no CHL.
