Hi all :) Thank you so much for looking at my question first off! :) I'm trying to get all my paperwork to turn in to get my CHL. While I was on the dps website, I found that I am eligible for an indigent discount. I'm just unsure of what paperwork I need to send in for proof of the assistance I receive to be able to get the discount and not slow down the process. Thank you again for your help!! :)

Code: Select all

Sec. 411.194. REDUCTION OF FEES DUE TO INDIGENCY. (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of this subchapter, the department shall reduce by 50 percent any fee required for the issuance of an original, duplicate, modified, or renewed license under this subchapter if the department determines that the applicant is indigent.
(b) The department shall require an applicant requesting a reduction of a fee to submit proof of indigency with the application materials.
(c) For purposes of this section, an applicant is indigent if the applicant's income is not more than 100 percent of the applicable income level established by the federal poverty guidelines.
When you fill out the online application you get a checklist of all documents you need to submit. The specific document(s) required to prove indigency should be on your checklist. If you plan to fill out the application on paper and send it off with all the other documents via snail mail, you should call DPS before you mail the documents and see what the proof of indigency is. It might be your last tax return, or it could be a copy of your medicaid card - DPS will have specific requirements. You will have the best chance of getting a direct answer by calling DPS. Don't email - it'll take them forever to get back to you.

It says "For purposes of this section, an applicant is indigent if the applicant's income is not more than 100 percent of the applicable income level established by the federal poverty guidelines."
