Hello to all. My first post here so a little about me.

I was in one of the first TX CHL classes many years ago. My father was a policeman for Fort Worth and he insisted that I get the CHL. Live in Weatherford, TX and I am retired from that big defense contractor in Fort Worth. In a previous career path I was a teacher (geometry, algebra, English, drivers ed, health, etc.) so I have a passion for instruction. I am also a Ham radio operator and I have ridden a motorcycle since I was 16. Currently on a Harley Softail Heritage Classic.

Now for my question.

I am going to Austin on April 1st for the CHL Instructor course. Is there an instructor study guide that I can download somewhere so that I can get a head start on the class content?

Since you are already a handgun instructor, that part should be easy. I would just read through the CHL-16 and review some of the laws, both the statutes and government code. Those are the big ticket items. The other stuff should come pretty easy. Oh, and if you have ammo, make sure to practice with your semi-auto AND revolver before you go to make sure they are functioning properly and you can score high enough qualify easily.

If you pay attention in class and follow along with the discussions / questions, you won't have any problem with the written exam. As stated above, it wouldn't hurt to go over the CHL-16. The main thing is to make sure you have firearms that work and maybe even bring backups if you can. During our range qualification, I saw a couple of people that had problems with push-off on their revolvers. The DPS range officers will check for things like this and will not let you qualify with that weapon if it is deemed to be unsafe. They will also check your ammo to see if it complies with the list of approved ammo.

This forum is a pretty good interactive study guide.

Very good advise written tests will be no problem good DPS Instructors. You just can't have problems with your firearms so again make sure they're good to go & enjoy the class.

Great idea on backup firearms. I'll look to borrow a couple of firearms the same caliber I plan to take (.357 sig & .357 mag) . Unfortunately with the state of the ammunition supply I hate to pay for ammunition for 2 additional calibers just for backup.

On the DPS site, you will find a downloadable pdf of the CHL16 which Keith already mentioned. On the same site you can find a link to the Admin Rules. Read those also. This forum also has a section for Instructors. Keep an eye on the posts in it. Good luck in your class!
