I've had a couple of LEO's ask for the letter I used to renew my CHL under the modified process for LEOs.

Here is my template both as text and attached .doc file - I pretty much copied it straight out of the Government Code section.

[Agency/City Letterhead goes here]

To: Regulatory Services Division MSC 0245
Texas Department of Public Safety
PO Box 15888
Austin, TX 78761-5888:

(1) This statement is regarding [Insert Name Here], [Insert title – ie patrol officer, sergeant, investigator, etc].
(2) Officer [Insert Name Here] has been accused once of a low level infraction of [Insert Policy Violation here]. He was disciplined with [letter of reprimand, re-training, etc].
(3) Officer [Insert Name] is good mental and physical health.
(4) Officer [Insert Name] has demonstrated proficiency on the following weapons:
a. Handguns: [Insert handguns here]
b. Shotguns: [Insert shotguns here]
c. Long guns: [Insert long guns here]
(5) It is my recommendation that Concealed Handgun License be issued to Officer [Insert Name] under chapter 411.1991 of the Texas Government Code.

I learned this last go around when I decided to keep it going. We only had to correct the letter once. I found it ironic how the LEO, who can already carry anywhere w/o a chl due to their being a leo in the first place, has to provide all that info, including a recommendation from the department, ect when the general public does not have to. Makes no sense. The only time I even carry mine is if I want to buy a gun.

Here is a tip. No joking, Tex. If you pay the normal price there is no extra paperwork. :txflag:

Or get an AZ non-resident as your backup.

Why do you have to do any extra paperwork at all? Why don't you just have to provide your TCLEOSE license number or a copy of the license with the same paperwork we do and that's it?

IIRC - it's less paperwork our way. No class, etc. just the form and $25.

Ah, well then, that makes sense.
