I'll try and make this short! 1979 at the age of 15 I was placed on juv probation for 6 months (burglary), adjudicated as "a juvenile in need of supervision." This was done in County JP Court. From what I've read on here I simply cannot go and request the records without having them unsealed by a judge. I do remember the jp telling me that these records would be sealed forever if I stayed out of trouble, which I have. I'm just starting the chl process, have not taken the class yet. Is DPS able to just look at the records once I get the process started, or will I need to get these unsealed, etc.? I don't have any type of criminal record as an adult.

You do not have to get them unsealed, nor should you even try. That would be counter productive.

If you ask for a copy of your records, it should show no record of arrest or conviction.

Send that in with your application and you should be fine.

DPS might be able to see them, but as long as you have the paper showing no conviction you should be fine.

You will have to call juvenile probation and ask for a letter stating what you did, when you did it, and what the sentence was, or a letter saying that no record was found. You cannot just go down there and request a copy(ask me how I know)they will not release anything without a judges signature.

All you need is the letter saying, "no record found".

When you sign the "AUTHORIZATION FOR RELEASE OF RECORDS"

You should also read carefully the appliction form on the criminal history page it says, List every arrest you have received..

I think if you leave it off it is a disqualification..

Could be wrong; but it was explained that way in the DPS CHL Instructors course in 95.
