South Florida's News-Press reports that hosts Val St. John and Scott Fish were back on the air Wednesday, following their "dihydrogen monoxide" (aka water) joke Monday that created a false panic and resulted in their suspension.
Meanwhile, Diane Holm, the public information officer for the Florida Department of Health in Lee County, told The Atlantic Wire that the department is "not pursuing any other charges." Monday, Holm had said that it was her "understanding is it is a felony to call in a false water quality issue.
So they get in trouble because their audience are not educated. I fail to see how they could have been charged with a felony due to "false water quality issue". They did not report a false quality issue. They said the dihydrogen monoxide (water) was coming out of faucets, which is true and correct. In what universe could that be a felony.

:banghead:

Glad they were reinstated and no charges brought against them.

Monday was the 20th anniversary of one of the best pranks ever, when the local news reported that due to an emergency, the space shuttle was going to be landing at Montgomery Field in San Diego, a general aviation airport with a 3700' runway, and about 3 miles from a military field with a 12,000' runway. The entire area around the airport filled with cars in a twinkling, kids pulled out of school, chaos, despair, anarchy, etc. Hilarious, unless you were pranked, of course.

This prank has been pulled many times by many different people. They should not have been suspended for others' stupidity.

In VA Beach there is an old landfill they call Mount Trashmore. One April fools, local dj's went on air saying methain gas build up from decomposing trash we ready to explode. People started evacuating the area and filled 911 dispatch centers with calls.
Another year, they announced that a armored car full of $100 bills crashed at a major intersection and local law enforcement was request help cleaning up the mess, of course you keep what you pick up. The catch was the two roads they gave as the intersection didn't meet and ran parallel two each other. People walked out of work and went speeding up and down the two roads trying to find the intersecting point.

"understanding is it is a felony to call in a false water quality issue."

:banghead:

Would have had a fit if they said that lead, arsenic, radium, and uranium was coming out of the taps too. Which, of course, is true depending on where they live

Panic is panic.

At the heart of every prank is a kernel of evil.

I've never understood the joy some receive causing fear or embarrassment in others and then smirk with delight at how gullible is the public.

Yes, the public is often gullible and so is everyone at times.

So?

Go out of your way to hurt them?

Deliberately causing fear or embarrassment isn't a prank or a joke, it's simply another form of cruelty.
