IDPA classifier near Austin

Would you be interested in shooting an IDPA classifier at the Temple Gun Club IDPA before June? (The IDPA classifier is only open to current IDPA members.)

Temple is about 1 hr north of Austin, and the Temple Gun Club IDPA is one of the closest IDPA matches to Austin. Its MD would consider hosting a classifier if there is enough interest. So if you are interested, please speak up.

Just got word that River City Shooters in San Antonio will be hosting a classifier on 4/15. So I'm planning to go there.

In any case, if you are near Austin and like to shoot, I'd highly recommend attending the Temple Gun Club IDPA. I've been there twice, and they are only about 1hr north of Austin, very close by I-35 (i.e. an easy drive). The IDPA is shot once per month on the 3rd Saturday on every month.

The last 2 matches I attended had 6 IDPA stages each with optional (and free) carbine match after. The last carbine match had 4 stages with lots of movement, cover, position shootings. I'd recommend bringing at least 100 rounds for the IDPA and 120 rounds for the carbine.

since the official closure of "crazy richard's place" there hasn't been a place to do IDPA or IPSC shoots

do they do IPSC stuff there as well?

This is eye-opening. Is there really no place to shoot IDPA in the immediate Austin area?

Nope, sorry. The nearest IPSC is at Lagrange and South San Antonio, both at about 1.5 hrs from Austin. I used to shoot IPSC, but due to the distance I've switch to shooting NRA silhouette and conventional pistol.

However, since seeing my low scores at my last IDPA match, I've decided to add an IDPA match once every month or 2 to keep me in shape. There are lots of IDPA matches near by: Temple is the closest IDPA to me; next is Cedar Ridge and Copperas Cove.

There is none in the immediate Austin area, the closest ones are 1 hr away for either south or north Austin.

Counting myself lucky to have so many IDPA options around Houston. I'd better start taking better advantage of them.

(And Ching, BTW, where did you find your scores for the PSC March match? I tried the PSC-IDPA Website but get an under-construction sign for the March results. Thanks!)

And Jason, is was <tap-rack> my absolute pleasure.

I did a few IDPAs several years back and much preferred IPSC because we got to shoot a LOT more...
IDPA was at least when I went (both times at the range on Hamilton Pool rd) was tedious....

is the temple one a bit more active?

All the IDPAs I've shot have pretty low round counts and not much movement. I think if there're IPSC clubs nearby, I'd still be shooting IPSC since, like you, I seem to prefer the fast, sloppy and high round count IPSC stages.

Now, not having shot either IPSC or IDPA for a while and shooting strictly NRA conventional pistol and silhouettes, I noticed that even IDPA seemed very fast to me. So, if you've not shot IPSC in a while, I'd suggest giving Temple IDPA a try. (I mean having IDPA is better than nothing.)

However, if you want a truely fun and addictive shooting sport, you should dust off you .22LR pistol and rifle and give NRA silhouette a try. It is hosted by the Austin Rifle Club, which is only 15minutes east of Austin.

You don't have to be a club member to shoot the ARC matches.

ARC will have a table at the next Saxet gun show in Austin (4/21, 4/22); stop by and check it out. I'll likely work at the table on Sunday.
