Road Trip Planning with your CHL

Hello All,
Recently, the boyfriend and I have been thinking of doing a long road trip across the U.S. We are fairly new to the CHL, carrying everyday lifestyle, and needless to say, we love it! We love Texas and know that many states do honor the Texas CHL license, but some don't. We're debating on whether we should just avoid those states and travel around them or just leave our beloved EDC's at home. What have been some of your experiences in terms of planning a road trip? or perhaps an interesting story?

I take road trips on occasion for work. Luckily for me all the states I pass through have reciprocity with Texas. If y'all do have to pass through a state where the Texas license is not honored, I would suggest still bringing your firearms with you, but unloading and storing them in a locked container(or whatever is necessary to abide by that states laws). Never leave your firearms thousands of miles away!

We travel quite a bit and found the book
The Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States a very valuable reference guide. It's a great buy at 14 bucks.

One of the law's provisions was that persons traveling from one place to another cannot be incarcerated for a firearms offense in a state that has strict gun control laws if the traveler is just passing through (short stops for food and gas), provided that the firearms and ammunition are not immediately accessible, that the firearms are unloaded and, in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment, the firearms are located in a locked container.
Under this provision, someone driving from Virginia to a competition in Vermont with a locked hard case containing an unloaded handgun and a box of ammunition in the trunk could not be prosecuted in New Jersey or New York City for illegal possession of a handgun provided that the individual did not stop in New Jersey or New York for an extended period of time.

If you don't leave home without a firearm accessible, why would you want to be hundreds or even thousands of miles away in an unfamiliar area without a great way to defend yourself?

Good point. Thats why I want to see if other people have had good experiences with road trip planning with their CHL. I hate hearing stories about how a tourist defends themselves with their handgun only to be arrested and fined for having a weapon in a weaponless state (for example, New York)
or in a state where the TX CHL is not valid...etc.

Good idea. I like it. What about in a state where there are no firearms allowed?

Here is an app for iPhones that I have on mine that seems handy, called Legal Heat, so you can access the legal requirements etc on every state as the need arises. It is supposedly updated fairly often.

For anyone who travels frequently, it seems like a must have.
