Spent the afternoon watching an "American Hoggers" marathon, and have a question.

It seems important to them that the hog be captured alive. I think in one episode someone mentioned that a dead hog was worthless. Can somebody explain why? Seems to me that the important thing is to eliminate as many feral hogs as possible, and the most efficient way to do that would be just to shoot them.

Why do they need the hogs alive, and what do they do with them?

What do the buyers do with them? I'm presuming make sausage, but I didn't think feral meat was very tasty.

I have heard of places/ranches/game leases that buy live hogs and then charge city slickers good money to go out and "hunt" a wild pig.

Some smaller hogs are sold for human consumption and the larger ones make dog food. I believe that there is also a foreign market. Some people make big bucks catching wild hogs. Had a friend who made $1500 to $3500 a month catching hogs at one time. Under 100 lbs they are very good smoked.

I was tired of watching hog shows that never showed them being killed. The only reason I watched this today was because they were wearing revolvers and Robert was carrying a rifle in his scabbard.

It was several episodes before anyone shot. Robert took a shot from horseback at a running hog angling away at probably 75 yards. Then he was surprised that it didn't go down.

In another episode, Krystal emptied her gun while chasing a hog. Let's see, off-handed while running???

But I thought heard comments about the hogs being killed. Maybe I was mistaken or maybe it wasn't PC?

Live hog prices run between 12 and 70 cents a pound around Texas depending upon whom you sell them to. They are considered a delicacy in Europe, and the larger hogs are worth more. Here's a forum discussing prices, and it includes a list of places that buy them. This is a list of Texas Approved Swine Holding Facilities. Here's an east Texas woman who buys feral hogs.

"Fifty to 85 pounds is 12 cents a pound, 86-110 is 20 cents a pound, 111-210 is 35 cents a pound," she said. "And anything over 200 is 45 cents a pound. If you bring in a 212-pounder, you're gonna make $95."

Frontier Meats in Ft. worth sales feral hog as wild boar. I know the City of Irving sales their trapped hog to Frontier.

Apparently, feral hogs are VERY popular in China as well. The meat gets sent to China, they process it in their factories, package it up as "Pork Pot Stickers", freeze them, and ship them off in bulk to Chinese restaurants in the US.

Ok, maybe that's not true. How would we know?
