Couldn't be true. It's not lawful to bring a gun in there.

You don't commit suicide unless you're mentally ill.

so he gets in an argument and shoots himself???
The incident happened late in the race when Kirk Franklin, 42, of Saginaw, Texas, apparently got into an argument with other campers, according to the Associated Press. Track spokesperson Mike Zizzo said Saturday night that the incident happened "in or around a pickup truck" in the infield.

Is there a possibility that mental illness was not the case and maybe alcohol was?

I thought laws were supposed to prevent that. Am I understanding correctly that someone carried a gun into a prohibited place and ignored the law? Say it isn't so!
/sarcasm off

It must be mental illness otherwise we might have to start a discussion about banning alcohol.

One of the local news outlets reported the story, and at the end noted, " The race was sponsored by the NRA ".

Of course. Liberals want Conservatives to "own" everything that happens. The NRA "owns" the shooting because it happened at an NRA sponsored event.
On the other side of the coin, Liberals never own anything. Detroit has been run by corrupt Democrats for 50 years and none of them are responsible for the chaos there. All of Detroit's problems are because the Dems where not allowed to have enough money to fix the problems just like Chicago's gun murder rate is the result of GA's gun selling policies, not the mismanagement of the Chicago police force by the corrupt politicians soliciting gang voters.

A sad sick person killed themselves with a gun they should not have been able to bring in. Gun laws had nada to do with this only that they don't stop criminals or the insane.

Sounds like poor security at the gate. Considering what happened at the Boston Marathon, I think our major sporting events better start doing a better job of that. Sad for both he and his family that he has done this not to mention the people who were forced to witness it.
