I was told today that if you keep your holster wiped down with a little mink oil it keeps the holster looking new and it slows up holster wear.

Anyone ever hear of this?

I use mink oil for my boots in the winter; it's supposed to improve water resistance and help my feet stay warmer. I do think it's effective for those purposes (I have to wash it out in the summer or my feet get too warm; it doesn't let the leather breathe as much as other products do). It also helps keep the leather soft. Whether it would be good for your holster I can't say, but that's my experience using mink oil on bullhide leather.

They say it can affect the color of your leather, so be aware of that if you try it.

I prefer Lexol conditioner.

It is better. Soaks in better and doesn't soften the leather as much.

Softening you holster with any oil will reduce it's holding power of your pistol.

Just live with using the gun and holster as they were meant to be used. They are tools. Any marks are signs of use that they are designed for.

Alan there is no one that wants their pistol beat up and dragged down the road. Besides you never clean your guns. I think that is another reason you should give me your 1911.

I use the The Lexol conditioner on my leather seats in my truck.

Now that I have converted Robert to 1911's, I doubt he would be too happy if I were to give any of them away!

I agree. Adding oils and conditioners soften the leather, which is bad for holsters.

There was a self-shooting with graphic pictures that made all the gun forums a couple of years ago. Guy was sitting in passenger seat and suddenly shot himself in the right hip with his holstered handgun! The pictures showed the leather had softened so much that the top of the holster was virtually floppy. It got creased and folded into the trigger guard and ended up pulling the trigger with bad results.

A firm/rigid holster that firmly protects the trigger is crucial for holster safety. DO NOT compromise on that.

I've been using this Rawlings glove butter for high end baseball gloves.

Another question:

Does Kydex scratch less (wear less) than leather?

I never put mink oil on a leather holster.

Kydex will give more holster wear.
