Gender revealing party?

I was at a meeting this evening when we were told that one of the participants would be late because he was at his daughter and Son-in-Laws gender revealing party.
After thinking how sorry I felt for one everyone involved, it was explained to me that the young couple was expecting and the party was to reveal the gender of the child.
I was very much relived but still very much confused. Have any of you heard of or attended such a party? I must be getting old.

Hidden agenda to get more stuff from people. Card companies are probably involved in the conspiracy.

Pretty common in my age group.

One couple even went to the trouble to have the doctor write the gender of their baby on a piece of paper and seal it in an envelope.

They then took the envelope to a local bakery and handed it over with the instruction to make a blue cake if it said boy, and a pink cake if it said girl. They then had a party where we all enjoyed a few drinks, and then cut the cake to reveal the gender of their child. As a gun toting, God fearin' , Merican' I would never say this, but some people thought it was quite sweet to find out the gender of the child the same moment the parents did.

We've been to several. I'll never do one myself, but each one we've been to was quite enjoyable. . . great food, cold drinks, and plenty of fun.

My older niece did it with cupcakes for my younger niece. Again any reason to get the family together.

This kinda thing goes along with couples now stating: "We're pregnant"...

The first time I heard this stated was from a young man and I almost swallowed an ice cube.

If such a thing had been stated (by a male) when I was a soon-to-be father, the hooting from my friends would've been deafening - it's a new world...
