I know that the George W. Bush Presidential Center is located on the campus of SMU, but is it part of the University and as such carrying is prohibited?
I want to take a road trip and see it, but would like to know before I get there.
Being SMU, I doubt it would be legal even if HB972 becomes law. But, being GWB, I'd like to think he wouldn't mind.

The Bush Center, like all Presidential libraries, are federal buildings - part of the National Archives and Records Administration. As such, you can't carry in there, and will go through magnetometers and searches of all carry-ins, according to articles in the local media.

Firsthand knowledge - you cannot carry in the building. As stated, you will go through a magnetometer, and any bags will be checked.
Technically, you can't leave your weapon in the parking lot (it's on the SMU campus).

Legally, leaving a weapon in your vehicle on a SMU parking lot is no different than leaving it in your vehicle on a Walmart parking lot.

And why is this?

Parking lot is not a premises as defined by the Texas Penal Code.

I guess I'm confused then. I thought I've seen a number of different changes in various laws that would specifically allow carry in school parking lots. If it's already allowed, why would there be laws that specifically all it?
(Not arguing here, I really am unsure).

It is LEGAL, but if you are an employee or student at the university, you can be fired or expelled for violating their policy. The proposed bills would prevent that.

The changing laws were to prohibit schools from making up there own rules that would adversely affect students and faculties. sort of an expansion of the parking lot bill.
