Wowzer, that was fast and easy.

I applied to renew my CHL on the first day the website said I was eligible, which was 8 May. I paid online, $35 for the fee, $2 for using the credit card.
This is my third renewal, so no class was required, so I did not have to mail in a certificate.
I am a vet, and they still had my DD214 on file from last time, so I did not have to mail that in either.
So I didn't have to mail in anything.
Just checked online and my background check is completed, license is in manufacturing. Hooray!
Now I just need to keep an eye on the mailbox.
Last time I renewed, it took 35 days from when the application was mailed in, PLUS time spent in the renewal course, plus time to get and prepare the application.
This was much easier.
I guess I could have waited until September and paid $10 less, but not going to grumble.

How far out did you get notice, reason I ask is I checked the site yesterday as mine expires 18 Nov I figured 6 months would be May 18 but nothing shows.

You can renew 180 days in advance, which for you would be 22 May. Mine expires 4 Nov, so 180 days prior was 8 May, which is in fact the first day the dps website would let me start the process.
If they sent me a written notice in the mail, I haven't seen it yet. I don't know whether that is because it was lost, my wife saw it and knew I was already applying, or since I started on the website on the first day eligible then it wasn't sent.

Come September all renewals should be this easy.

So today it changed from "Manufacturing" to "Mailed."
