With many friends who have served our nation in the air from World War II to the present, and as the proud parent of an Air Force Academy cadet, I invite you to take a moment and read the story of Bill Crawford, a man who went from sweeping combat fields in search of the enemy, to mopping halls and picking up trash for his fellow Americans. He was known only as a squadron floor janitor at the Air Force Academy until his heroic acts were rediscovered by an AFA '77 cadet and then properly acknowledged by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

To all of you who have served, you are in my thoughts this approaching week, and I thank you all for your service from the bottom of my heart. To those of you who left brothers behind 'over there,' your grief is my grief.

TAM, I just read that same post. It really makes one stop and think about who might be in their midst, quietly watching, going about their business each day. One big thing that struck me was the change noted in "heroes" and their recognition. I put heroes in quotes there, because to me, being good at sports and getting paid to play does not a hero make. The janitor in the article and many others like him are the heroes to me. They all paid a price, some, the ultimate price and then came home and went back to their lives. The modern heroes that so many young people look up to these days are overpaid showboats, full of themselves and their entourages. If only young people had more true heroes to look up to and attempt to emulate, we might not have some of the problems of today.....

I also like how Mark Alexander derided businesses for commercializing Memorial Day.

I remember reading that great story a year or so ago. Someone sent it around in an e-mail and I was proud to pass it on to several others. If you're patriotic in the least bit, it touches your heart strongly. I'm thankful to have grown up in a time when we learned all about our history and the great men and women that helped to make our country what it is. Our National Anthem chokes me up every time I participate in singing it. With people like Mr. Crawford and others going on to a better life, it's kind of like George Jones' song, Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes? God Bless America
