I THINK WE DODGED A BULLET

A year ago we were considering who might be an effective conservative candidate of President.
One of the people under consideration was Chris Christie. His bold talk and his feisty and combative attitude with the press and NJ legislative opponents were attractive. His conservative fiscal stands sounded refreshing. His personal story was compelling.
Many of us in the pro-2A community had some reservations about his comments/actions relating to firearms and related rights. As an example, remember that he said the NJ gun laws were "about right". Also, you might recall the man who was jailed and convicted for having a firearm in his vehicle when he was found to be in possession while moving his possessions to a new residence. Christi, commuted his sentence, and let the conviction stand, rather than pardoning the man. This was disturbing, if not disqualifying for some of us.
If any still had doubts about his strong and principled leadership, I submit that he has recently shown himself to be a self centered, cowardly and opportunistic politician, and nothing more.
With the death of NJ Senator Lautenburg, Christie could have appointed a "non-liberal democrat" to fill the remaining term of Lautenburg. That could have helped to oppose gun control measure, Obamacare, illegal immigrant amnesty and other issues sure to come up over the next year and a half.
Instead he scheduled a special election for October. It is widely assumed that liberal democrat Corey Booker, a very popular and high profile mayor will run and win the special election for the Senate seat. He did appoint the AG to serve till the special election after he agreed not to run against Booker.
All the political manipulations are not really surprising but the cowardly aspect comes in the date set for the special election...only one month from a regularly scheduled election in November in which Christie will run for re-election. The thinking is that Booker's place on the ballot would attract so many African Americans to the polls that it might endanger his own re-election prospects.
Additionally, his fiscal conservatism is shown to be a sham in that this self serving special election will cost NJ in the range of $25 million. when combining it in the regularly scheduled November election would have cost almost nothing.
Not that we had an ideal candidate on the conservative side, but Romney still strikes me as a more honorable man.
