Instructor Renewal
Are there expected to be any changes in instructor certification renewal, other than sending in the NRA documentation? Still needing to have another instructor certify our proficiency?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Instructor Renewal
Too early to know yet.
Re: Instructor Renewal
I suspect we will all have to truck to Austin for training and shooting. Wonder if we will need to shoot both SA and NSA? :(

Re: Instructor Renewal
I suspect we won't (have to truck to Austin). Absolute worst case, we have to qualify with another instructor. No way they can qualify all the current instructors at the DPS range in a single season.switch wrote:I suspect we will all have to truck to Austin for training and shooting. Re: Instructor Renewal
It won't be a single session. They will schedule multiple renewal classes (one day - half day at range, half day in class), just like we used to do ever 2 years. When they changed the law, 4 years ago, saying we could renew online, taking a test on the computer and NOT shoot the proficiency course, they said every 4 years we would have to come to Austin, shoot and take a classroom course. sort of like CHL's now can skip the 3rd renewal course and take it every 10 years.
Course, they could drag us to Austin for a big renewal class (my initial class had about 300 instructors, if I remember correctly, then have us shoot back at home w/other instructors. I suspect they will make us shoot in Austin. After all, that's the fun part for them. Why give up the range time and spend 6-8 hours in a classroom. :(

Re: Instructor Renewal
My opinion, no way they will make all of us go to Austin. They already have in place a procedure to allow instructors to qualify other instructors. Why would they want to haul all of us back there if they don't have to?switch wrote:It won't be a single session. I said NOTHING about a single session.

"Session" - "Season"... whatever!
Still, my crystal ball is on the fritz, so I have no clue what DPS might do.

Apparently, they can do what they want. After all, they ignored the NRA trained requirement for 18 years. :)

I just pointed out that we used to qualify (yes all instructors) every 2 years. 4 years back, they said we would skip the instructor renewals in Austin, do it online, every other time. It's time to go to Austin.

They do not have an NRA requirement. NRA trained instructor is just on of many ways to meet the Texas CHL instructor certification requirements. (That had been overlooked since the CHL started. I was told this happened because the were trying to quickly get the CHL program off the ground.)

Re: Instructor Renewal
I knew that. TCLOSE, PI Instructor and 'other' training are not common, more expensive and probably impossible to obtain by 12/31. NRA is widely available (or will be this year. :) )
Re: Instructor Renewal
Well.... for all practical purposes they do. The requirement is NRA, TCLOSE, or some other nationally recognized program of instruction. How many other can you come up with that are nationally recognized?twomillenium wrote:switch wrote:You said:

Re: Instructor Renewal
If you want to go the way of NRA instruction then you will have satisfied the Instructor requirement for the TEXAS CHL instructor certification. BUT you are NOT required to satisfy the TEXAS CHL instructor certification through the NRA.
