Going to buy a boresighter, has to fit different calibers. Budget of $40.00. Looking at a Bushnell magnetic Boresighter 740001C on EBAY for $34.95/free shipping. Thoughts?

I must have bought it at a gun show or shop, but here it is, pretty good price, I would say.

I have had it for quite a few years. When the switch became erratic, I called to company and received a brand new one in a few days.

The free one that came with your rifle - remove the bolt, sights/scope and bore on target - three rounds to get on paper at 25 yards - move to 50 yards and further three shots each. Works for me!

I have that bore sighter. I personally would spend the extra money and get a green laser so atleast you have a chance of seeing it in the bright daylight.Though for a bolt action rifle i think its easier to just take the bolt out and sight down the bore.

you have the bushnell or the laserlyte? I am not understanding the directions for just removing the bolt, although it prob does not matter because i am not sighting in any bolt action rifles.

What are you trying to sight in?

I have this one works great I have used it both on rifles and handguns.

I vote for the LaserLyte. I have one and used it to sight in my Ruger American/Redfield Revolution combo. Paced off the distance from the front door of the house to the back door of the house, just about a foot shy of 15 yards. So, I dialed it in at that distance. Took it to the range (for the second time, first time I messed up and didn't locktite the screws, duh) and it was on for windage at 50 yards and only about two or three of inches off in elevation. Made getting it zero'd easy. I was happy with the purchase.

Just a word of caution about laser boresighters: Most of them don't give results much better than the whole "through the barrel" approach.

Generally, here's what I recommend:
Handguns: In-the-chamber laser boresighter. Sightmark sells these. You have to get one for each caliber, but it's worth it IF you change sights often. Otherwise, just play "shoot and scoot" with your sights.

Semi-autos (AR-15/AK): In-the-chamber boresighter, again, works best, but you can easily do "through the barrel" sighting to rough-in, then drift sights at near distance, gradually increasing to desired zero distance (as mentioned earlier).

Bolt rifles: If you intend to shoot long range, have a professional gunsmith do the work. They can get the job done for MUCH less than it would cost you, although, again, "through the barrel" works great for bolt guns.

When adjusting iron sights, just remember this mnemonic: F O R S (pronounced "Force"). When moving the point of impact, remember "Front - Opposite, Rear - Same". So, if you want to move point of impact to the LEFT, and you are adjusting the rear rights on a handgun, you would nudge the sights to the.... _______

Ruger .22s, .17, ARs at the moment. Myself and a couple of friends bought some red dot sights to put on a few different rifles for target practice and ultimately to hunt hogs on a chunk of land here in East Tx. We want to do our part in the war against wild hogs. The red dot scope paperwork recommended a bore sight. After installing it on a Ruger 10/22 I went to the backyard and tested it and was not even on paper (14x14 size target approximately) at about 25 yards. LaserLyte, I bought it to sight in my bolt rifle. the first time shooting i didnt even hit the paper despite the laser and scope being lined up. I had better results bore sighting.

Some magnetic muzzle mounted boresighters and black rifles with flash suppressors don't always mix.
The flash suppressor doesn't always allow the tool to seat square with the muzzle and it sets up a little differently each time. It frustrated me no end until I figured out what was happening.

Then I had to zero the old fashioned way anyway.

Ditto on what Excaliber said! Each of the rifles you mention can be sighted just like an AR - use the 25 meter "zero" target (you can print them from online sources free). Use the 25 yard range (just so you can annoy the pistol shooters) or go to the 50 yard range and set up a stable platform at approximately 27 to 30 yards. Use the standard BSZ technique - 3 shots, adjust up down left right clicks, 3 shots. Maybe then go to 50 or 100 range to confirm. Having said that - I really am not a fan of shooting a hog with a 22 or 17. The 223 will drop em just fine - but bigger is better and most east Texas hog shots are 50 yards or less anyway. Plus the 22, 17, even the 223 is easily go willy peter by a branch or twig. Where are you in East Texas - if near me I would be happy to get you some range time?

Please don't use a laser sighting device that goes into the muzzle at the range. I only use mine in the shop. You can really ruin a good rifle in a hurry.
