Drivers license in hand!

As many know, I just moved from California. We bought a house and have been working like rented mules trying to get settled. I managed to get license plates for the cars (I'm told that CA plates are called "targets" here!) so the neighbors will not be ruffled unnecessarily. Today I braved the forces of darkness and ineptitude and confusion and managed to get a Texas D/L. for all the grief and frustration, I have to say it was nothing compared to renewing a CA license.

As soon as my new CHL class certificate arrives, I can join you in the Waiting Room!

Do replace your CA plates sooner rather than later. My wife was harassed several times by good ol' boys for having California plates before we finally got our Texas plates.

I replaced the CA plates as fast as possible. My call letter plates are being stamped out now, with a temp placard on the back. Apparently, you can have up to 3 vehicles with the identical radio operator plates. That caught me by surprise!

I stopped in at DMV, or whatever you call it, the other day and it was packed with only 3 gals processing. Yesterday, I was on an errand and saw the parking lot half full so darted in and the wait was nothing compared to CA. I did have to drive home for my passport and tax return to prove my SSAN. I also brought both DD-214's to get the Veteran's indicia.

The 30 day residency requirement we fretted about in another thread a few weeks ago is waived if you are surrendering a valid D/L from another state. I had insurance and auto registration docs with the new address and they were happy with that.

I started to fill out the online CHL app last night but was stopped by the requirement for an audit number. I have the temporary receipt for a D/L which has no "audit number" that I can find. So, more waiting. Thankfully I have FL and UT permits so I'm carrying.

CA and any other out of state place in any area is a target for thieves. They will think you are a tourist and have valuables in the car.

My permanent TX drivers license was issued on July 2, but I am still not in the DPS system to apply for a CHL.

I e-mailed DPS to ask how long it might be before I was in the "system" and received a reply to just apply by mail.
