I'm looking for a very reliable new .45 acp pistol and I have never fired even one round thru a Rock Island Armory product.I have heard good things about them , can you guys share your thoughts?

They are very good pistols and have a lifetime warranty.

It seems to be rare that anyone gets a lemon, but when they do, the company makes it right.

Many people who buy a Rock Island wind up buying another. That pretty much says it all.

They don't have the pretty finish that some more expensive pistols have, but looks ain't everything.

I have two of them. I think no less of them than I do my Kimber or Dan Wessons.

I have a citadel 9mm 5in barrel and so far I have put about 500 down range with 2 ftfs one in each session I shot it. It is just a ria tactical 9mm with better sights dual safety and more slide serrations. Fyi citadel ria high standard and of course armscor all are made with the armscor frame. I cant speak for high standard but ria citadel and armscor are great pistols. To clarify these are all companies that import the armscor frames from the Philippines and use thier parts to finish assembly. Many of the internal parts are from the same companies from what my Smith says so they are very similar.

Think ford Lincoln mercury if you will. Same foundation with similar or some times the same parts. Sti is another company that I believe uses the armscor frame. Think Lincoln or cadillac with sti.

I have a cople and have more rounds thru them than I can remember but very reliable.

Do you guys know if any gun shops in Houston stock Rock Island pistols?

I'll agree with all of that.

I've never shot one, but I've sold a few when I worked in the gun store and all the customers seemed very happy with them.
No-frills (or a few frills on some models now), high-quality 1911. Good steel. Good fit. I've read that the dimensions and spacing of holes and such are more "within spec" than a lot of more expensive pistolas.
I ordered commander-size basic GI model that should be here in the next week or so.
I've looked at them before but never got around to it.

I've been tinkering with kitchen-table gunsmithing. So far I've limited myself to small, easily replaceable parts, staying away from frames and slides and barrels.
I wanted to stop hacking on my Kimber before I really mess something up and get an inexpensive, but quality, 1911 that I can go to town on without fear of being out a ton of money if I make a mess of it. So the Rock Island is on the way.

Academy sells citadel. I have seen the 3.5 and 5 inch in both 9mm and 45. The run about 500-580 though. Like I said they are a little nicer then the ria. They would be the mercury. Lol

The ones I have sold have fit and finish better than some of the "major" manufacturers. If you are worried about it failing buy from Gallery of Guns - it will cost a little more but you get their lifetime warranty.

All Rock Island pistols have a lifetime warranty. It's for the life of the pistol, not just the original purchaser. Buy a used Rock Island and you still have the lifetime warranty.

I thought all manufacturers had the Glock warranty. Something breaks, send it in and they send back a new one... oh wait, they don't all do that. Nevermind.

A RIA 1911 was my first 1911, bought the day after my 21st birthday. I've had others since then, but that RIA is still in my gun safe. I've no idea the round count through it; all I know is I finally had to replace the recoil spring when it no longer reliably cycled, a few years back. I also found out that yes, you CAN shoot a 1911 until it gets too dirty to function as well.

I dunno if I'll part with it. I'm not particularly -attached- to that 1911, but it's functional and reliable, and not worth much $$ as a used RIA, so there's not much point in getting rid of it.
