Ford Motor Co. has a new surveillance system for police cars that automatically sounds a chime, locks the doors and puts up the windows if it detects someone approaching the car from behind. The system — which Ford is patenting — is the first of its kind.

What happens if the officer leaves the car with the keys in the ignition while stopping someone for a traffic violation and a pedestrian happens to walk behind the police car minding his own business? Or even another LEO responding as a backup. I see a lot of radio calls by police asking for someone to come open the car door.

I wrote an application for a repair center to track and document the product down the repair line, a large part of the code was to prevent human behavior as it was so hard for them to follow a process. Imagine getting a response when you ask somebody why they did not follow a process and they say "It did not say I couldn't do it."

Don't most cops carry spare keys so they can leave the car locked and running or is that just around here?

They already have this, my six-year old Mazda uses an RFID prox card, never leaves my wallet. I'm surprised this isn't standard on police models.

I can see it now. Kids seeing two cop cars parked window to window talking will always find some reason to walk by. One at a time.
