wow when it rains it pours

Over a 24 hour period the Jeep breaks down. Apparently a "bearing" went out on the clutch. I am not happy with this as I just paid big bucks a few months ago for a new clutch/bearing. They tell me this is a different bearing..unbelievable causing a rod to throw or something. Now I need a new clutch as it damaged the new one? Not real happy. Might be time to sell off the old jeep for a newer more fuel efficient car. While pushing the jeep my back went out so I am in massive pain (already have a preexisting injury from work). The local leos were a big help as my daughter broke down in a bad spot on a busy road around 0100 AM. Next had the AC guy over as the house AC is not working right. We have no AC. Getting a new core and other stuff tomorrow for massive $$$.....The only good news is that it's my younger daughter's 17th birthday today. Bad news for her because dad has no $$$$$ left to spend on her today :smilelol5:

TJ - throwout bearing? Those just don't usually go out...especially if it has been replaced recently. I'm doing a mental image of the clutch setup on a Jeep and am having a hard time finding another bearing (see image) :tiphat: :

I have to agree. Sounds like the mechanic may be trying to cover himself instead of warranty

The pilot bearing, which is not shown. Of course, it too should have been replaced at the same time.

Every clutch kit I've ever installed comes with a disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing.

Now parts sometimes are defective, and sometimes they just fail. I've had parts fail before the car made it out of the shop.

texanjoker,

I'm very sorry to hear this.

It does seem when misery strikes it comes in massive quantities.

I fully understand about back problems too - I've had back surgery...again, you have my sympathy.

The bad thing is all those disasters happened at once.

The good thing is, according to the rule that bad things come in threes, you should be good to go for quite a while.

I think they replaced the throw out in March when they did it, but he tells me the jeep has the original pilot... I am dumbfounded as to why they didnt replace it as well unless the mechanic wanted future failure to make money. I don't think they will touch my cars again after this repair.

Abraham, I hear that about the back surgery. They tell me I need a fusion which I have been refusing since they first told me 6 years ago.

I'm dumbfounded, too. There is no way I would do that job without replacing the pilot bearing as well. Even if you were trying to cheap out and insisting that I not replace it so you could save a couple of bucks, I'd send you down the road.

texanjoker,

Mine was done by a neurosurgeon.

I had some ruptured discs. The pain was so intense I couldn't step without screaming. For three months.

He went in and removed a bit of disc material and some bone. This relieved the compression on the sciatic nerve.

I went in at 10:00 in the morning. Home at 4:00. Pain Gone.

Trouble is, I've re-injured my back from too much living cuz anything worth doing is worth over doing...and now I'm helping a Chiropractor buy a Bently...

I know nothing about Fusion surgery - but I spent some time with a couple of surgeon's a few years back (we were all cigar smokers at the time) and one was a neurosurgeon and the other an orthopedic surgeon.

While chugging on a cigar, I mentioned my back surgery. The neurosurgeon referred to my surgery as a "nibble-ectomy" and the orthopedic surgeon stated if I'd come to him with my problem he would of fused my back.

So, perhaps your back could helped by a neurosurgeon doing a "nibble-ectomy" rather than a fusion. But what do I know..?

I've had the fusion surgery, and it's been pretty darn good so far. They put in a polycarbonate fiber (PCF) cage and plate (think about something that looks like this), and most all of my pain has gone away for good. The way he explained it, the device holds the two vertebrae together until they fuse, and a few weeks later, they were as good as being one longer vertebrae.

I do have some other issues above and below the fusion, so I'm not at 100%, but my doc thought it was best to take the minimalist approach and only do one for now. I'm glad (so far) that he did.

Sorry to hear about all the troubles. There was another thread on this forum with some discussions about back pain. I can't remember if that was the original topic or a diversion. Anyway, one of the posters had all kinds of history and issues with his. He got an inversion chair or something like that and swore by it. You might do a search on the site here and see if you can find that thread.

I say all that because my boss has about 3 vertebrae fused now. Each time you do a fusion it adds stress to the discs/vertebrae around it which can lead to the need to do more fusions. That's not a guaranteed outcome or anything, but it is a possibility. I'm not a doctor, I've just heard a lot about his personal experiences and pain management. He can barely turn his head or tilt it now since they are up near the neck area. He has seen all kinds of neurosurgeons, etc. He even had some weird electrical pack installed in his butt with wires leading to the nerves in his neck at one time to see if they could send some kind of signal that would cancel out the pain signal.

Yep, pilot bearing, right there where the input shaft goes into the crank - that is a super simple fix when you have the tranny out.

texanjoker, I would definitely go back to the shop where the clutch was done and ask to speak to a manager. Ask him why the pilot bearing was not replaced during the original clutch job and insist that any repairs done should be under warranty and at no cost to you. There's no way any reputable shop would not replace the pilot bearing during a complete clutch replacement. It's completely unprofessional and asking for trouble, as you have discovered.

If they won't do the work under warranty, they I would tell them they won't be doing any repairs for you any more, that you're taking the Jeep to a reputable shop to get the work done, and that all your LEO buddies will know to never use them for any work. You could even threaten to sue them in small claims court to get your money back on the original clutch job, which was clearly unprofessional and negligent.
