Whole different world... San Francisco.

I'm in San Francisco this week for some training. My hotel is 1 block from China Town. I had lunch with several of the employees of the company I'm taking the training at. Listening to their conversations, All I can say is this is an entirely different world than where I come from.

I did get a little bit of perverse pleasure seeing the reactions when I an answered the question about my hobbies. :evil2:

When I explained what CHL means... the look was priceless.

I would swap places with you in a heartbeat.
Despite the looniness, SFO Chinatown has some awesome eating.

If you like Chinese...

Tiny, good for take-out.
Dumplings... Mmmmmmm.
IIRC, cash only.

Also... If you get anywhere near a Hobees' (unfortunately the closest one is in Redwood City), please send me some Bluberry Coffee Cake. To Die For.!

Safe journey.

I walked past that place yesterday. I actually considered it for supper. I chose a different place. I wasn't impressed. I ordered a sampling of different meats. Two were duck. I love duck... I think they chose the end of the wing, and 4 gizzards to serve cold. There was a kind of bbq pork and calamari on the plate too. I thought the calamari was sliced peppers... Looked like sliced peppers... Didn't taste like sliced peppers. I also didn't think the bbq pork resembled anything like any bbq I've ever had. I did like the cabbage and the rice. I remember looking around after eating and thinking to myself, there's a reason everyone around here is so much thinner than where I live.

The training company served Korean food for lunch. It was a little better. I opted for Greek for supper. It was excellent. I may wander over for some Dim Sum tomorrow night for supper. I think I'll try to make it over to Fisherman's wharf Wednesday night for supper.

No. Just easily deceived, which doesn't say much about their intelligence.

Back in the early 90's I spent a lot of time visiting HQ in Palo Alto. My preferred hotel was a few blocks away from the El Camino Real Hobee's... We at breakfast there most days, and the coffee cake was like having dessert after breakfast. Sometimes a piece even made it to the office for a mid-morning snack.

that's one of the one's we would go to

I liked California. loved the diversity of people and food and loved the fact that we could be at the ocean in a matter of a couple of hours, but it just started getting too weird and we had a baby and needed to figure out what to do about school and, and, and, and....

I never spent any time in Chinatown in SF. The last time I was there was on business, and I stayed at the Pickwick at the corner of 5th St and Market. I remember that the very first time I ever heard of or entered a Buca di Beppo restaurant was on that trip over on Howard St between 4th and 5th. I thought that the waiter had swindled me by deliberately serving me a full portion of linguini and clams, because the 1/2 portion I received was big enough for three men and a boy. I left with a huge bag of leftovers, which I gave to a homeless woman a few feet away from the restaurant. Later, the über-liberal geek running the training class I was attending upbraided me for giving the food to a homeless person. "You'll just encourage them," he said.

Of course he did, TAM. Remember, charity is bad and taking care of folks is the government's job, in the liberal-progressive world.
