Near Bowie, Montague County, a white 18-year-old high-school student was found fatally shot inside a pickup in a field around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The deceased attended Guyer High School in Denton and was the starting fullback on the football team.

The sheriff said that a rifle was found at the scene and said that alcohol was believed to be a factor.

No motive is known, and no suspects have been identified.

Bowie is northwest of Fort Worth, near the Oklahoma border.

R.I.P. Prayers for his family and friends. A death like this can leave a terrible mark on the young man's friends.

Officials are now using the word accidental, though the district attorney is speculating about criminal charges.

It's a shame. He seems like a decent young man, on the right path in life until someone made a series of irreparable bad decisions.

One doesn't "accidentally" shot oneself with a rifle in a pickup truck in a field. Probably suicide from being drunk (or) get drunk to get courage to shoot self. Can't imagine another perpetrator would be stupid enough to shoot the guy and then leave the weapon at the crime scene... However, "stupid is, stupid does..."

The information that I have heard on this is that the 2 young men were with 2 young women
and they were camping on a relative's land, prior to the start of dove hunting season.

The former owners of the land were a married couple, he an EMT and she a nurse. They still lived next door
to the field in question. They ran to the area and tried to save the lad, but it was a head shot with the .22,
and their attempts to save his life were not successful.

The shooter was charged with MIP (Minor in Possession of alcohol) and intoxication manslaughter, but released
on only $500 bail.

The above information is believed to be correct, but sometimes witnesses/reporters can get their
wires crossed.

Another tragic example of how guns and alcohol are a potent brew for disaster.

Interesting how they mentioned the name of the 17 year old male but not the 18 year old females.

Newspapers have to be careful about naming people and then getting sued for libel. As a rule, in this kind of situation, they do not mention someone who is not a victim, suspect, or public figure.

I'm sure everyone in town knows who the women are by now.
